Wade were overturned, the abortion issue would, politically speaking, have the opposite effect. Democrats would become united in their efforts to push for state legislation preserving a woman’s right to have an abortion; while religious extremists would demand a complete ban on abortion, driving moderate conservatives from the Republican party, resulting in the loss of political power. Indeed, we have already seen a preview of the coming attractions with the recent ban on abortion that was rejected by South Dakota voters, and backfired on its Republican proponents. Attempts to legislate morality have repeatedly failed, such as in the case of "Prohibition" under the Eighteenth Amendment; but that never stopped people from repeating their mistakes.
While abortion is a very important issue to our society I do think it tends to distract us from other more pressing, more relevant issues. perhaps I am mistrustful, but I think perhaps politicians wish to keep us distracted, like children with a shiny toy.

I agree with that in part. Abortion should not be strictly banned. That was the problem with the SD bill. It gave no remedy in case of rape.
South Dakota voters axe restrictive abortion law - USATODAY.com
I would have never been able to vote for such a bill. And I can understand why it failed. A less restrictive approach would have been more successful IMHO. Although the margin of defeat was uncomfortably close.
South Dakota Rejects Abortion Ban
"With 91 percent of the state's precincts reporting, 55 percent opposed the abortion ban while 45 percent supported it."

I disagree. This IS an important issue to a lot of people. There are just a LOT of things going on in a society today. Abortion, war, environment, social issues, all of them deserve some debate and consideration.

Although that draconian SD bill was very suspect with it's strict ban. They should have known that wouldn't pass. But then again, like I said, the vote was rather close.

Abortion is a 'cash cow' to the right wing. Roe is never going to be overturned. That would cause more problems than it would solve. BUT, politicians know that all they have to do is propose a strict abortion law, and the money will come rolling in.

I have to wonder if the right wings sudden focus on gay marriage isn't because their supporters are catching on to this, and they need a new 'cause' to fill their bank accounts.
Bother not the cat. For they are sneaky and will piss on thy keyboard.

That's not "all" we are discussing though. There are a lot of issues on our collective plate right now. I pointed out a few of them. Heck, just recently it was dogfighting that had a lot of people up in arms. The nation has a short attention span and anything shiny will distract us from what's important. As for our countries' medical care issues and starving people...that's a problem that will probably never be solved. Either you raise taxes, which I don't agree with, or you will never have enough money to help people who have somehow lost the ability to help themselves or the offspring they have. As a child who grew up in a single parent home...if you can call a 4 room 500 sq/ft cinderblock duplex a home.. I understand some poverty. But I also saw my mom do what she had to do and we only accepted food stamps for less than a year. It may not be the children's fault, but just how much responsibility should the government accept? As we all know, abortions ARE legal.
