Any sex education in school will be treated like any social other issue the school administration tries to teach us about. Teens don't listen to anything adults say. Abstinence-only education won't screw anyone up. No pun intended

Abstinence-only sex ed only gives one side of the story. The one they'd rather have us choose. But because, obviously, everyone will NOT choose that, if someone is uneducated about birth control then the schools are not doing much to prevent teen pregnancy.
You're 16...
Where did you first learn about condoms? In a sex ed classroom? I doubt it!
Where did you first learn about Birth Control pills? In a sex ed classroom? I seriously doubt it!

Also, it's pretty unfair to teenagers to just say, "Hey, here's a box of condoms. Now go out and screw like piggies!" That's not helping anything.

I don't think that "abstinence only" is necessarily the best way to go. But good grief, let's not be acting like teenagers "can't help themselves." Aren't you an intelligent young lady, PC? Aren't you capable of making intelligent decisions for your self and about your future? Aren't you smart enough to know that there's a difference between love and just sex? And can't you see that there are FAR MORE consequences to teenage sex than just the possibility of pregnancy and/or STDs?

THAT is what teenagers need to be learning! You don't need more information on how to put a condom on!

Why is it the school's job to prevent teen pregnancy? What about the parents or the internet?

I really do not know what is better I think it is all up to the indvidual. Problem is we all get stuck in a situation no matter what we think is better as a younger person. Is it society or is it the one that gets one stuck? I would argue it is both.

i know you're joking, but that's sort of the problem.

Teens not listening to adults + selective listening (a bit of "i heard from somewhere that condoms supposedly don't feel as good" and a bit of "condoms don't work")= a bad idea for everyone

I mean, they get told that condoms don't work. They decide to have sex anyway and... well, I don't need to tell you what happens.

I'm all for telling teens ALL the facts... abstinence is best, but if you just can't hold out, protect yourself! That's also where parenting comes in... you can't expect schools to raise your children for you. You can't be with your kids ALL the time, but if you've done your job, SOMETHING is likely to sink in.

and jefferson, you're half-right:
STATS.org - Contraception v Abstinence Education
Quote:
While Texas championed abstinence education, and teen pregnancy rates were going down, the Texan teen pregnancy rate went down less than in other states.
BUT

Quote:
Advocates for Youth found 19 programs it deemed scientifically worthy and which proved their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, reducing HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, or producing a behavioral benefit such as increased contraceptive use or delaying the onset of sexual activity. Of those that actually decreased pregnancy rates, all included contraceptive education.
