Many indian tribes (by the way, they like to be called native americans these days) enslaves each other after tribal wars. Slavery wasn't new to them.

Do you have any links?

That would be something that I would like to study.

Slavery in America

A useful study guide.

Slavery of many different sorts was common all the way back to the beginning of history. Indeed, I expect it was common to CHOOSE to be a slave in return for shelter and food in rough times. People sold their children into slavery sometimes for their own well being.

They've already had their reparations and apologies. They can look to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendment passed in their honor, and just for those who were oppressed.

I was just pointing to a promise made and a promise not kept. This would be very easy to measure and follow through on.

You totally miss the point. Should the Republicans be held to their promise or not?

Have you ever visited the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, KOS? That's an interesting place to visit. I spent several hours there, learnng more about them. I have some Cherokee in me.

Actually I didn't miss the point at all.

Although reparation would certainly be fair, it is not possible to fulfill that promise.

It doesn't matter if the republicans should be held responsible for the promise since they are not going to be able to make good on it. They are not able to and they have no desire to; it is simply a bad debt.

Part of the purpose of the Reconstruction after the Civil war was to integrate former slaves into the United States as citizens. Civil rights legislation, which negated the black codes in the southern U.S. and gave black citizens civil rights was enacted in 1866, by Congress, who overruled the veto by President Johnson.
Also vetoed by Johnson and overruled by Congress was the Freedman's Bureau Bill, also enacted in 1866, which was established just before the Civil war ended, to assist slaves in the transition of becoming free men, aiding them in finding employment, and educating them about their new roles as citizens and as voters.
One of the main goals of reconstruction was education. Reconstructionists established over 4,000 schools in the South to be attended by black children, and seminaries that would be colleges for black citizens, and they provided 22 million rations of food to hungry white & black southerners in the South.
After the attempts at reconstruction, which was undermined by such groups as the KKK,
the reformers pulled back to let the freed slaves fight for their rights and for their survival. Americans of this time believed in individuality and meritocracy, earning things through hard work and determination. They believed this applied to blacks as well as whites.
The federal government was not involved in economic justice, there was no welfare program to help those who struggled to survive.
The lands in the South that had belonged to those in the Confederacy were returned to them, except in rare cases, such as General Robert E. Lee's property.
The Civil War has been over for about 150 years. Slavery has been over for 150 years. Slavery it is a stain on the historical fabric of our country, but the time for reparations is long past.
Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.
Albert Einstein
