It doesn't matter if the republicans should be held responsible for the promise since they are not going to be able to make good on it. They are not able to and they have no desire to; it is simply a bad debt.
Thank you for veryifying what I have always said. Never trust a Republican. They will lie to you and decieve you just to get what they want. Thank you again. And by all means never let a Republican babysit your children.

You are mistaken about the 40 acres and a mule, as a note... Republicans were not the issue.

40 acres and a mule

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

40 acres and a mule is a term for compensation that was to be awarded to freed American slaves after the Civil War— 40 acres (16 ha) of land to farm, and a mule with which to drag a plow so the land could be cultivated.
The award—a land grant of a quarter of a quarter section (a common homestead size of the time) deeded to heads of households presumably formerly owned by land-holding whites—was the product of Special Field Orders, No. 15, issued January 16, 1865 by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, which applied to black families who lived near the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Sherman's orders specifically allocated "the islands from Charleston, south, the abandoned rice fields along the rivers for thirty miles back from the sea, and the country bordering the St. Johns river, Florida." There was no mention of mules in Sherman's order, although the Army may have distributed them anyway.
After the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, his successor, Andrew Johnson, revoked Sherman's Orders. It is sometimes mistakenly claimed that Johnson also vetoed the enactment of the policy as a federal statute (introduced as U.S. Senate Bill 60). In fact, the Freedmen's Bureau Bill which he vetoed made no mention of grants of land or mules. (Another version of the Freedmen's bill, also without the land grants, was later passed after Johnson's second veto was overridden.)
By June of 1865, around 40,000 freed slaves were settled on 400,000 acres (1,600 km²) in Georgia and South Carolina. Soon after, President Johnson reversed the order and returned the land to its white former owners. Because of this, the phrase has come to represent the failure of Reconstruction and the general public to assist African Americans in the path from slavery to freedom.

Your first statement was correct. Never use Wikipedia. For about 10 years after the Civil War The Cofederate States Representatives in Congress could not vote on anything unless given permission by the Republican Party. So your Wikipedia story is just that, a good story.

Your first statement was correct never use Wikipedia. For about 10 years after the Civil War, Confederate State Representatives in Congress could not even vote unless given permission by the Republicans. So that makes your Wikipedia statement just a story.

So I guess we are to assume you read that in the newspaper...seeing how you porvided no link show the wiki to be just a story.

Yeah I know if you search long enough on the internet you can find "proof" of all sides of a story and this site is bias one way and that one another and of course the wiki is ALWAYS wrong.

Let me suggest another strange item. A real book by an academic. Try this one - America's Constitution by Akhil Reed Amar.

Would it have been so hard to put that in your previous reply.....

I'm just curious here, would you feel the same way if the Democrats made the promise?

Actually, that is entirely irrelevant.

The short version of the same story is that the 40 acres and a mule were ordered and distributed by an Army general, and then revoked by the President.

Here is a copy of the text of the orginal order:

Order by the Commander of the Military Division of the Mississippi, January 15, 1865

This was revoked by President Johnson the same year. The Republicans don't really come into play at all.

Does that mean that the wiki is correct [gasp] say it isn't so.
