Arguments for Affirmative Action
Can I get some intellectual arguments from people who are for Affirmative Action? Could you tell me why you think it is necessary?

I think affirmative action is of no use any more. the fact that so many blacks and hispanics live in ghettoes and lead sub standard lives is a problem not of a single race or ethnicity, but rather of poverty.

Affirmative action can not fix this situation as well as higher taxes and better education.

I think all american citizens in the top 5% income bracket should pay an extra 10 % in taxes. Let face it, they will still be insanely rich, and the government will have more money to speand on education ( since all their other money goes on fighting stupid wars)

I think everyone in America has an opportunity to better themselves with hard work. There are plenty of free grants in America to help those in low incomes. There are a lot of people In America who have bettered themselves by taking advantage of programs and hard work.

I think wars are stupid also. We all would be better off if those who hate America would find something useful to do with their time instead of trying to hurt us.

I think you are absolutely right. However a lot of Americans do not believe in higher taxes and using it to better education. That is why schools in our nations capital can remain falling apart and the ghettos intact. Even without higher taxes we could divert money from the military but the same people don't like that either. Strange.

This is exactly why I feel AA is still a necessary evil.

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

I believe "any more" is the key phrase here.

On the other hand, I totally disagree with your assessment of assessing the top 5% of Americans extra taxes. They're already paying more than their fair share. If you knew the American tax system, you'd know that - as well as the fact that MANY lower-income working Americans not only don't pay income tax, they get money back from the IRS that they never paid in!

You are right. America truly is the land of opportunities... However inability to utilize those opportunities cannot only be explained by laziness. That is a simplistic view.

The fact that america has millions of homeless, millions living below the poverty line and millions of illiterate adults indicates that there is more than just LAZINESS to blame. There is a more complex dynamic that creates this type of social issues.

I would never agree with giving cash grants to poor people. However i do not see why there is such an uproar about raising taxes for the richest people. If you make 2 billion instead of 3 billion.. does that really reduce your quality of life? No it doesn't.

Instead of taking that money and giving it in cash to the poor how about spending it on fixing public infrastructure
?? like education, healthcare and housing??

Or is there such mistrust of the government that nobody believes the money will be spent properly? In that case some revision of the government should be timely.

Giving people the basics for decent life for FREE does not make them into freeloaders. That just gives them more opportunities to work harder and perhaps not involve themselves in organized crime like int he ghettoes.

And like i said i have more sympathy for the poor than the rich. If a man complains about ONLY getting 2 billion instead of 3 billion then he is just being greedy.

Dude i am a citizen of a country where i was paying 47% income tax. And rich people pay even more. But that doesn't make the rich any less rich nor does it cut into their summer in the canary islands. It just makes sure that everybody around them AT LEAST has a roof over their head, a school to send their children to, food in their stomachs and equal opportunity in ALL FIELDS OF LIFE.

Sure there are freeloaders who exploit the system. But even those have been reduced because the system is now so efficient that cheating just aint worth it. It IS possible to administer such as system as all the scandinavian countries have proven.

The point is that for every freeloader there are at LEAST 5 deserving families. I would rather that the rich earned a billion less and the freeloader freeloaded.. AS LONG AS THOSE 5 DESERVING FAMILIES HAD THEIR SITUATION EASED.

I think the only thing that is needed is an even level track to run on and we should not change the level of the hurdles based on race, color, creed, religion
