| Affirmative action works in employment, education and contracting and is suppose to provide equality by requiring that all races and genders be given equal opportunity. Affirmative actions is also mandate to redress the effects of past discrimination. So the question is where does it end???? In order for affirmative action to work, one of the basic things it does is use race and gender in assigning, awarding, or allowing a candidate to achieve their aim. In other words, it judges based on race or gender, the very past discrimination that it is trying to redress. No matter what you do, you cannot provide an equal outcome. You level the playing field and ensure that every candidate is evaluated on the same criteria, or judged based upon the same standards, but in the end, somewhere, someone will always be a better candidate. dmk Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles -Russell Kirk- | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Thanks for the explanation. Ironically, if employers didn't have such things in place and really did just pick the best person for the job, then that would be the best way not to discriminate. Is it being suggessted that employers could be hampering their businesses by making sure a certain amount fall into certain catagories? I'm pretty sure there'd be plenty of court cases if they didn't. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| I said that using AA gets results faster because if employers said (and I know that it has happened) "White males need not apply", then employment figures would get closer to balance sooner. That is not fair. Equality can not be measured collectively, only individually. My Grandchild should have equal opportunity with your Child or Grandchild no matter the race or gender. You don't know me so don't criticize me. "For my own part, I sincerely esteem it a system which without the finger of God, never could have been suggested and agreed upon by such a diversity of interests". Exactly tadpole! Republicans are stuck on the ol barefoot and pregnant and women should not vote thing. “Affirmative action” means positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded. When those steps involve preferential selection—selection on the basis of race, gender, or ethnicity—affirmative action generates intense controversy. The development, defense, and contestation of preferential affirmative action has proceeded along two paths. One has been legal and administrative as courts, legislatures, and executive departments of government have made and applied rules requiring affirmative action. The other has been the path of public debate, where the practice of preferential treatment has spawned a vast literature, pro and con. Often enough, the two paths have failed to make adequate contact, with the public quarrels not always very securely anchored in any existing legal basis or practice. Affirmative Action (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Live the Light, Give the Light, Bring Heaven to Earth Every Day! I am not a human being having a spiritual experience, I am a spiritual being having a human experience. The ancient Greeks used to say, "You shall know a man by the friends that he keeps." Given the nature of their friends and advisers, what are we to conclude about the Republican party: Stop the madness before us it stops! | Affirmative Action in that blacks get preference over the whites is not necessary in the least. The only thing I'm even remotely in favour of is out of two equally-qualified candidates, one black, and one white, choosing the black one. If they're both equally qualified, most people would end up hiring the white one anyway, not out of racism, but simply because people are more comfortable being around familiar people. This is of course, assuming the hiring manager is white as well. It's long-served it's purpose. A black professor from Berkley, John Ogbu, conducted a study in Shaker Heights, outside Cleveland. Parents were complaining that their kids weren't receiving adequate education like the white kids were, in one of the best school systems in the country. The study determined that the kids and parents were at fault for doing poorly, as it was seen as "being white" to do well in school, and their parents were almost completely uninvolved in their kids' schoolwork. The results infuriated the parents, who were convinced it was the school system not motivating them enough, and Ogdu was basically ostracized. Things like that are why I see AA as unnecessary. Sure you have exceptions to everything, but in general the culture in black communities asserts that not dressing ghetto and speaking in street-slang are considered white, and they reinforce their own stereotype. There are lots of smart black children that are doing phenomenally in school settings, but a large percentage are too convinced that it's not cool to do well, and their parents simply aren't on their case to do better. It's NOT the teachers' responsibility to make sure high school kids are doing their homework. If the opposite of pro is con, what is Congress? | |||||||||||||||||||||
