Prison officials refuse to donate "last meal" pizza
Philip Workman, who is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 1 a.m., had a last request -- that his final meal of a vegetarian pizza be purchased and given away.

Prison officials refused.

“He instructed that it be given to a homeless person but we’re not able to do that," Tennessee Department of Correction Spokeswoman Dorinda Carter said.
Instead, Workman decided to skip dinner on the eve of his execution.

"He could have had food from the cafeteria that the other inmates were having tonight," she said.

For the latest updates on the scheduled execution, check back at Tennessean.com.

Well, that was his choice. Most prison officials would grant requests "within reason". I guess the request by the inmate was deemed unreasonable.

I think it made a statement that they were ignoring that the man still had a soul. A soul that could know redemption.

I think he had become a born-again Christian before he was executed, based on the news story of his final words:
Workman’s final words were brief.

“I've prayed to the Lord Jesus Christ not to lay charge of my death to any man,” Workman said.

About two minutes later, with his eyes closed as he gulped, somewhat nervously, Workman uttered his final words: “I commend my spirit into your hands Lord Jesus Christ.”

He then turned his head slightly to the left and lay motionless, as an ashen color overtook his face. "

I wonder if any of you can tell me if it is still customary to grant a last request to a condemned person.

If it is, what is so fricken difficult about buying a veggie pizza and giving it away?

The remark by the TDOC spokeswoman that Workman could have had dinner from the cafeteria seems incredibly callous to me. Whatever happened to having a little human mercy? Complying with the requirements of law is one thing. Being a heartless bunch of bastards about it is not really necessary.

Agreed.

I don't know - it might be a job requirement in that field.
