This Is When The Problems Began
Leslie Gore song "You don't Own Me" is when women began to get the ridiculous notion of their independance. As we all know, it went down hill from here. Before this song was released, there was no such thing as spousal abuse.

Prepare for an onslaught from DTT's newly-formed Country Women's Feminist Movement - y'all hear me now!

BTW is it coincidence that Britain lost its Empire shortly after giving women the vote?

There is a big part of me wishing it was 1950 - knowing what I know now of course.

No, it just wasn't spoken about. It was and continues to be a hidden crime. That 'if you pretend there's nothing wrong, it doesn't exsist' mentality that Victorian-raised society has practiced. It was/is silently condoning the actions of the abusers.

Yes I know. I almost posted that there was no crime back then but that would be beyond sarcasm. Actually, Leslie Gore was came long before Helen Reddy.

By the way PN...Here's a little bit of music history for you, on the topic of spousal abuse and how society justified/condoned it.

Did you know that in 1965, The Beatles released the album 'Rubber Soul'? One of the songs on that album is called "Run For Your Life". The song is literally about the male's perspective justifying abuse of their partner.

And it was actually a very popular album and song. Incidentally, the same generation that was born from the WW1 and WW2 parents, as well as giving birth to this generation we're a part of. In otherwords, they came from a generation of abusers, were condoning their own generation's era of spousal abuse, and were encouraging another generation to do so as well.

You really should listen to the lyrics.

Well, 3 threads you've done so far on this topic...I think you surpassed the sarcasm 2 threads ago.

But eh...Your threads have accomplished one thing for me. It put me on a quest to learn more about how the music culture has addressed the issues of abuse in general.

Just some of them can't be posted because of how graphic some of the photographs are of the victims of abuse.

Yeah, I guess I've about beat it do death. I won't start anymore such threads. By the way, I wouldn't even think about hitting my wife. It's not in me and the very thought of it is unconsiousable(sic). Besides, she would hit back.

Also, I do not, and have never, spanked or hit me now 12 year old daughter. I can't stand the thought of it even when she's naughty. I would like to think that most men are like me in that regard.

I share your sentiments PN. I wish it was so myself. But after being a victim myself, then working with other victims and their families?

It's an epidemic. And the numbers provided are very conservative of the amount of incidents of spousal abuse. For every 1 case reported, 6 (and that's a conservative number as well) go unreported. There isn't even an accurate number for the number of deaths due to domestic abuse, because they can only give the reported and confirmed counts of incidents?

Tell you what though. Makes me feel exceptionally blessed to have my husband. I could have been a statistic so easily. But I survived and in the process, unexpectedly found the man that would heal my soul and erase the wounds put there by the others. Who never forgets to let me know how precious I am, how loved I am, and how I'm deserving of all things and more.

I didn't truely live till he came into my life.
