I really don't see much of a change. Paper money still doesn't constitute much material wealth. Electronic money just makes it a bit easier. If people are uncomfortable with money that doesn't have any material wealth...perhaps we should go back to making gold coins.

That being said, however, a digital economy is much more prone to subversion. Being all reliant on electricity and computers; 'digital terrorism' could collapse an economy based on ones and zeros. Likewise, a few carefully placed EMP's could send a lot of people in chaos. But even so, it's still not that much different than today's society. Most people use paper money for pocket cash. As far as I know, not too many people walk into a car dealer and pay for their new car with a briefcase full of cash. Most if not all people are already reliant on the digital economy.

Perhaps, however, since the arrival of paper money didn't seem to do the trick, digital money might make more evident the complete farce that is our capitalist system. I thought it was pretty obvious that passing around green pieces of paper for man's happiness wasn't working, and it was pretty abstract and flimsy. Digital money doesn't change much, but it makes it more transparent perhaps.

Isn't that what happened in the show 'Dark Angel'?
