$20,000 bail and a night in prison for LESS THAN AN OUNCE???

Is this a normal sort of penalty in the US, or are they just making a big example of him because of who his father is?

Sure seems extreme to me.

. They found less than an ounce of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder, he said.

"He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs," Amormino said.

So some sleeping tablets and an anti-depressant that you can get from a pharmacist with a prescription. You must have pretty full prisons in the US if a few pills and a bit of weed gets you thrown in jail!

Is that really seen as something serious?

Yeah, but there's laws and there's laws

Possession of cannabis in Britain has been downgraded recently (it's now a class C drug), but the penalty for *supplying* cannabis has been increased from a maximum of five years in jail to a maximum of eighteen. Technically, passing a joint to someone counts as supply, so you could go to jail for 18 years.

In practice, if a police officer sees you passing a joint to a friend in the park, he or she will almost certainly turn a blind eye. S/he *might* decide to caution you and confiscate it, but it's a lot of paperwork and if an arrest was made (which is unlikely, as the advice to police forces is not to arrest in these cases, though the police can choose to ignore that advice), it would usually end up with a fine of less than US$100.

They will take action if it's a bunch of kids smoking, of course, but that involves a formal caution and confiscating the drugs.

Mushrooms are pretty much the same. You used to be able to buy them pretty openly in some places, and the police have clamped down on trading in them.

However, these "maximum sentences" are jokes. no one's in prison for 18 years for passing a spliff to someone.

The reason we can't legalise dope is that we signed an international treaty (at the behest of the US, I believe) seventy years ago, and it would be seen as politically damaging to pull out of that unless the US goes along with this too.

What surprised me about the Gore case isn't that there are high penalties on the statute books, but that they're actually enacted in such minor cases.

Everyone keeps focusing on that ounce of marijuana. Lets see he was pulled over for doing 100 mph, speeding. In addition to marijuana they found prescription drugs that are considered controlled substances. In order to be in possession of said drugs, one must have a prescription. He did not.............

Does the Rush mean anything to anyone??? Is this not the same crime he committed, that got all you liberals up in arms. (FHs)

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

Everyone?

In reviewing the above posts, I see that
one poster seems to have overlooked the other drugs at first. He then discussed them in another post after someone corrected his misunderstanding.

As to whether it was the same crime as Rush or not or not, perhaps I missed the part where Gore Junior was forging prescriptions.

I also seem to have missed the part where Gore Junior is a spokesperson for conservative values.
