Intresting article KOS. I would have to say that not only does the state need to rectify the situation, but so do federal laws in order for the insurance company to recognize both the terms of 'spouse' and 'civil union partner' when giving insurance benefits to those in a domestic relationship.

Unfortunately DOMA would interfere with that more likely than not...

I think this issue says more about the inadequacies of the healthcare system in the US and the need to move to Universal coverage asap.

Marriage wasn't meant to be just a qualifier for insurance coverage

But thats the whole point boss. Marriage is a qualifying factor in an abundance of issues, not just health care. This is the primary reason GLBT couples are fighting for marriage equality.

Are transexual couples prevented from marrying?

How does that work - two men who think they're women? Two women who think they're men?

Perhaps a guy who thinks he's a woman could marry a woman who thinks she's a man??

Marriage should not be merely a collection of legal conveniences.

Funny you Gary. Thing is that I would have to disagree. I believe that marriage, as it is being discussed, lawful and governmentally defined and permitted marriage ought be nothing more than a "collection of legal conveniences."

You see, anything of weight, of value and substance first comes from heaven then from earth. This is more of just me and my swirly twirly spiritual ideas and love stuff but all the same. Call heaven heart if you would rather.

No one can define or permit or prohibit love and the commitment people make to others. But once that love is so stated, so promised, then if the government has established a means to demonstrate that love and commitment in a way that is socially and financially conducive to those who do marry, then it is simply a transaction of this earth. Not of heaven or heart. And whatever benefits the government mandates be given to married folk, they ought to give to any who choose marriage as their way to demonstrate their faithfulness to each other.

That would be the exact point OD; thank you.

The SECULAR aspect of marriage IS a set of legal conveniences. All else is between the couple and their own interpretation of the Divine.

When 1 in 8 couples is having problems with a set of laws designed to benefit them, something is VERY wrong.

You were plenty clear.

The emotional and spiritual aspects belong to the Divine and the couple.

The LEGAL aspects belong to the government.

We are discussing the legal aspects and the application thereof, so more personal aspects don't really come into play here.
