| Child removed from house with a horse and 7 dogs Modesto police found a child Monday living in a house "ankle deep" in feces from a miniature horse and seven dogs. Neighbors called police to report there was a pony as well as seven dogs being kept inside a house at 1233 College Court. When a Modesto police animal control officer investigated, a resident of the house admitted to the dogs but not the horse, according to police. The officer then saw part of the house and learned a child was living among the feces and trash. Additional police and child services were called to assist. Police found the resident removing a miniature horse from the premises. The child was determined to be living inside of a tent in the house to keep the flies out. Animal control supervisor John Bear said he had to keep one hand over his mouth as he walked through the house because the flies were so thick. The child was removed for his health and safety, said police. The dogs, which appeared to be in some distress and the horse, which is okay, were also removed. Taken into custody for child endangerment were Nichole Surkala, 37, the child's mother and Joe Curtis Silva, 30, the step-father. http://www.news10.net/display_story.aspx?storyid=30393 Another case of adult stupidity that a child suffered for. Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong. ~Richard Armour There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle. ~Alexis de Tocqueville | |||||||||||||||||||||

Ty, I used to work with my local Humane Society. I encountered several really nasty home situations over the years. One thing that I noticed was that the people responsible for these households were always much worse than stupid. They invariably had mental issues which caused them to be incapable of caring for themselves properly much less children or pets. The sad thing is that there is really no permanent solution to this under the laws we have now. The legal system turns such people over to the mental health system. The mental health system invariably turns them loose after a short period. And even if the original crop of children & pets have been permanently removed the parents/owners usually just create more babies and find more pets. I don't know what the solution is; I just know that we don't have one under our present system. Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
