Ward Churchhill Fired for Academic Fraud
I decided to post this under the CNN thread because amazingly enough, it is missing. I guess for CNN it was not newsworthy enough.

But Way back on June 27, more than one month ago, the CU Board of Reagents decided to fire Ward Churchhill.

It would seem that former Professor Churchhill had committed the following offenses:

Quote:
Historical facts: Churchill manufactured events in which European Americans intentionally spread smallpox to kill Indians. In one such event, the Army is said to have distributed tainted blankets to Mandan Indians. But no evidence backs the claim.

Elsewhere, Churchill claimed the United States adopted a formal racial code to identify Indians, similar to the code used by the Nazis to identify Jews. U.S. law includes no such code, legal scholars say.

Plagiarism: Churchill published an essay on water issues in Canada that closely resembles a pamphlet by a Canadian environmental group. He also borrowed a work on fishing rights originally published by Canadian scholar Fay Cohen.

Falsifying sources: Churchill wrote essays under the names of other people, which he then cited as independent sources in his footnotes.
Now many will claim that this is a First Amendment case. I disagree. Ward Churchhill did make statements that caused his tenureship to come under scrutiny, however, he willfully committed the acts aforementioned before opening his mouth. Had Mr Churchhill kept his mouth shut yes he would still be a professor, however, had Mr Churchill never committed the acts, he would also still be a professor.

Free Speech is not free folks. You have the right to say what you will, however, you also must face the reprecussions. I guess Mr Churchill failed to make sure his crap didn't stink before he opened his mouth.

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

Good.

I'm all for free speech, but flagrant intellectual dishonesty from a professor? C'mon!

For a student to plagiarize, to be guilty of any intellectual dishonesty, harbors serious reprimands. (From loss of a grade, to loss of credit, to even expulsion from the class and sometimes even school!) This guy IMO got what he deserved.

Everything is plagiarized, to think that anyone came up with something that has never been thought of before is plagiarizing, words have been used over and over again as thoughts are not owned by anyone, neither are words!

Secretary of State Colin Powell before the United Nations, 2/5/03 ... That report plagiarized large swaths of an essay written in September of 2002 by a ... t r u t h o u t - William Rivers Pitt | Blair-Powell UN Report Written by Student

Powell wasn't fired!

Awesome!

Hmmm, I remember watching that video awhile ago. A strange thing happened though, afterwards Carlos Mencia (Ned Holness, half-German LOL.) just wasn't funny anymore....

LMFAO!!

You know what, he should have been fired as well, not just for the plagiarism either. (A student's essay? LMAO!!) However, just because Powell wasn't fired, doesn't mean Churchhill should get a free ride.

BTW, 2nd link isn't working for me.

Powell should be Court Marshaled, fuck fired. for not defending the oath, first and foremost. I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic!

The wordings of the current oath of enlistment and oath for commissioned officers are as follows:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

"I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God." (DA Form 71, 1 August 1959, for officers.)
Oaths of Enlistment and Oaths of Office

A furious row has broken out over claims in a new book by BBC broadcaster James Naughtie that US Secretary of State Colin Powell described neo-conservatives in the Bush administration as 'fucking crazies' during the build-up to war in Iraq.

Powell's extraordinary outburst is alleged to have taken place during a telephone conversation with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The two became close friends during the intense negotiations in the summer of 2002 to build an international coalition for intervention via the United Nations. The 'crazies' are said to be Vice-President Dick Cheney, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz.

Really, tell that to Mark Twain, Ayn Rand, Martin Luther King Jr. or JFK. It is one thing to expand upon an idea first brought to life through paper or speech, but quite another to take the words that someone else has written and pass them as your own. If you were a student and did this, you would be failed and face expulsion. Should we hold our professors to a lower standard than our students?

Court-marshalled for what??? Do you even know???? Part of the oath is to follow the orders of the officers appointed above you, and the President. It would seem he held true to the oath. This criticizing the administration for only using information that supported their claim is ridiculous. It is the the repsonsibility of the opposition to bring to light information that contradicts the information.

However, if this the new standard, then apply it equally. If I am in a debate I provide information that supports my own point of view and that refutes the point of view of others. Just look at global warming, all the reports that are cited by the UN have supported their arguments, those lying fucks are ignoring all the evidence that disputes their claims.

Your final statement would have been murder not capital punishment, no wonder you have such a problem distinguishing between abortion and the death penalty.

Absolutely not.

If a student is expelled for plagiarism, (Using someone else's words as your own, my last English professor was extremely strict on us citing our sources, and plagiarism was basically a "one strike and you're out" kind of deal.)then a professor must be held to the same if not stricter standard. We get college credit, they get PAID, they must be held at the very least, to the same standards of honesty that we students must abide by.
