September Dawn Mormon massacre movie
What do you guys think about the new movie, "September Dawn" -- regarding the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre in the Utah Territory?

Has anybody seen it yet?

The film's director swears his research is sound, but I've seen/read information from several qualified historians who think he, at the very least, has greatly exaggerated Brigham Young's knowlege of/involvement in the events that led to a Mormon militia killing dozens of people.

The film's contention seems to be the massacre was more or less ordered and sanctioned by Young and the leadership of the Mormon Church -- but many historans seem to think that's not true -- an the massacre was more the result of misunderstandings and rouge elements acting on their own.

Anyway, was just wondering what thoughts you might have on this.

I was very interested in seeing it - until I read this in the Village Voice

Quote:
Shot in a style that might be termed Americana gravitas, September Dawn has the ham-fisted lyricism of political ads and pharmaceutical commercials. The schematic script is further burdened with heavy ironies and hackneyed dialogue. Everyone declaims their lines except for Hope; she swallows hers. The massacre, replete with knifing and bludgeoning, is rendered in slo-mo superimpositions and accompanied by celestial keening. The discovery of the atrocity is no less awful. One would need to be Shakespeare to truly script these scenes. Despite the presence of a Mormon Romeo and settler Juliet, co-writers Cain and Carole Whang Schutter aren't.
I figured I would skip it - maybe watch it on dvd when it's released

Well, I know the trailer ads I saw for it online are pretty cheesy...

... with the narrator saying something like, "The true secrets of this tragic event have been covered.. (da..da.. DUM!!!) until now!"

Yeah... like qualified historians and scholars who have been taking this event apart from every angle and laboring over the details for 150 years somehow missed something that an obscure film director was boldly able to uncover.. just in time to make this movie!!!

That part cracked me up.

I haven't seen the movie, but as far as historians go, the opinions change over time, especially as we move further away from history and can view it more objectively.

I'm with Tristan on this one. I'm a real hog for history movies.. but the apparent quality of this one might call for waiting until the DVD comes out...
