What do you think about privatizing the United States Postal Service?

The cost of postage would surely increase. The postal service is run as a service and is mandated by law to break even over time, with no profit. No private company would deliver mail without trying to make a profit, and this would lead to higher prices.

Privatization is not a magic remedy to everything.

Go to the nearest gas station. Has the competition ensured that gas prices have stayed low?

The gas station? Right now we are paying the transaction fee for America to launder Iraqi oil money.

But it still is a government monopoly... If we allowed a competitor to come to compete, and offer their service at a lower price it would be more acceptable. I don't know, I still don't think the government should control anything that could be done by private enterprises. We must remember though, its not a very hard operation, nor does it have to be a unified operation to deliver parcels throught the United States. UPS, FedEX, and DHL could probably perform the same opperations for less, plus with their newly generated revenues {they are taxed at the highest corporate tax bracket} we could streamline our government, lower our national debt, while at the same time eliminate a government monopoly and provide a service at lower cost. I know one of you pointed out that gas-prices are high, from privatization etc. but you have to realize that they are still lower that they would be if they were controlled by the government. Im guessing thats why In Italy the price of gas is like $6, compared to our $2, and those countries which create the illusion their gas prices are $2..experience massive inflation.

  • The U. S. Postal Service is already considered a private corporation . . . this was done more than a decade ago. It's a moot point with respect to privatization. With respect to competition, there is no justification for allowing the USPS to maintain a monopoly; like all archaic institutions, it is time for competition. The lobbying arm of the USPS, however, will fight all attempts to stimulate competition in their industry. A more appropriate debate would be how to improve the service, beginning with the ending of all taxpayer subsidies to this now corporation. Furthermore, the USPS should reimburse the taxpayer for all acquired assets. In terms of reducing costs, one could reasonably argue that mail should be delivered to the post office (boxes) and that people can get off their lazy derrieres and pick up their own mail. If the USPS can get a letter or package from the east coast to the west coast, then the recipient can exert some effort to pick up their own mail. This action alone would dramatically reduce the overhead and streamline operations.

I think the U.S. Postal service is probably the last thing we need to change. It operate very well. It is self sufficient, and is the only branch of the government that generates a small profit. I am a big fan of the postal service, it gives a high quality service at a low price to the american people.
