WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A weekend incident with racial overtones at a high school for deaf students could result in criminal charges with "enhanced penalties for a hate crime," Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Wednesday.

If I get pissed off at some chick and write nasty female slurs on her, am I guilty of a "hate crime" or just assault. How do you prove and determine the difference between "hate" and simple "anger"?
For example, if I get mad at a gay person and while we are fighting, I'm yelling homosexual slurs, how do prove the difference between someone hurling insults in anger and someone hurling insults out of "hate" of the particular group?

Just because advertisers spend billions of dollars a year trying to get into their head doesn't mean that everyone should get in a tizzy because they do a hateful thing. It's doubtful the full social and political implications were discussed before the act was committed. | |
