Black men must step up
Commentary: Black men must reclaim our children - CNN.com

Exerpts...
Dads matter, and it's ridiculous for us to act as if all it takes is a loving mom.

A lot of my colleagues will suggest it's too simplistic to assign such a high value to a dad being in the life of a child. But just take a visit to your local jail, juvenile hall or state prison

We shouldn't shame our young girls who get pregnant, but surely it shouldn't be seen as a blue-ribbon day.

I totally agree with him. I, a Black man grew up without my father. Poor, with a mother who had to make due. Now I see my sister, 28 years old, college educated, attractive, trying to find a husband...Good luck with that.
This is my new signature.

Black men need to realize that slavery was just a myth. Also, those photos of "Colored Only" waiting rooms and water fountains were all faked.

I don't believe these were myths or faked photography, Pen. America did not yet aquire the technology to fake pictures back then.
That being said; I, as a Black man myself; do believe that many of what we say are problems really can be solved by our taking the responsibility in our own lives, and stop looking to blame others (usually Whites, by some of the posts I've read here at DTT).
I'm proud to say that I was raised in a two-parent household. For Blacks these days, that is very rare. My mother passed away in 2005; 2 months short of their 50th wedding anniversary- Even more rare for Blacks.
As far as our economic situations (indivividual and as a group), there is nothing wrong with wanting the finer things in life- no group is immune from this. Too many of our Black men seem to think the only way to achieve these things are by resorting to criminal behavior. And this behavior is passed from generation down to the next generation.
Look at our Black celebrities and athletes today. Most have embraced the notion that they must be thugs to garner respect, recognition, and wealth. Where does that come from? From seeing the only Blacks with money while growing up to be drug dealers. We must rid ourselves of this way of thinking! Respecting crime only breeds more criminals.
