Cable Fable ?
Tonight I went to Wal-mart to buy a new printer. I use to buy just the ink but have found that printers can be cheap and what the heck, just get a new printer.

So I bought one on sale for about $35. An HP. I get home and go to put it together and install it to the computer. And it seems to be missing the USB cable that it spoke of in the directions.

Now I do have USB cables for the digital cams and the MP3 players. But would have thought the printer would have included it's own cable. Always has before.

So I called Wal-mart and the guy tells me that ALL printer companies decided a couple years ago to stop including cables with their package. It was a conspiracy of the printer companies to get all printers to make a universal cable. So now I have to buy a USB cable for the printer, cos it doesn't fit with the ones I have for the cameras or the IPods here.

I think this sounds like a hokey story that the clerk told me though. I do not like to be mistrusting, but it seems cah-razy to me to not include the cable.

Now I have to go out and buy one!

Or what?

Well have any of y'all heard this scam by the printer companies? Or is this fella on the phone "yanking my chain"?

That's not all.

New printers come with a "starter" cartridge - meaning its only half filled with ink.

So before you know it you have to shell out another $35 for a new cartridge.

Printer companies sell printers on the same business model that Gillette sold razors with replaceable blades - sell you a cheap printer and you have to buy expensive cartridges ad infinitum

Printers haven't come with cables for a long time.
The exception being wireless printers (you need to connect it wired first to set it up)
Printers have a 5% to 15% margin, cables and ink 70% to 90% margin. Most companies stopped the starter cartridge business.

Your $35 "bargain" will become a $100 expense once you get the cable and ink cartridges that you need. Businesses don't care about you - they care about your money - nothing else matters.
