The garysher thread

What do you think of Garysher?

Personally, I think that he has basically driven all of our strong posters away (including myself - at times, anyway).

Anyway - here is your chance to voice your opinion (in a civil way, of course). . .

What is this a sequel to my Obama thread? lol

Personally, I have nothing against Gary. BTW this is coming from a guy who knew him before DtT. Sure we disagree, sometimes vehemently, on some of the issues, and we've had out lil jabs now and then; but honestly, I don't feel any animosity towards him. He's alright lol.

Now on whether or not he's driven people away, that's up for debate. People can choose not to talk to anyone, they choose not to reply to his or anyone's posts.

Plus, we've had worse lol, a lot worse.

Good thoughts, Mike - will have to ruminate on that post a little. . .

I do agree that we've had worse - DH and JJ for starters (and in Gary's favor - I do applaud how he handled himself in those "Jewish" forums). . .

Now - I have no problem with Gary (at least from a personality standpoint). However, I just feel that if he's going to post on forums like the GM forum, then he should get his facts straight. I don't really see him as a bully - just someone who's ignorant and uninformed (I mean - how would he like it if one of his kids told him they were gay???? - I just hope that never happens. . . for the kids' sake, anyway).

But I'm straying off point. Mostly - I'm just curious to see how people generally feel here at DtT. Does the GM forum "dominate" discussions here? Do you feel that discussions there are too heated? Is Gary basically responsible for that heatedness?

I'm just saying that some people have nothing better to do than sit on their butt 24/7 - getting pleasure out of harassing gays for their own personal "livelihood". . . whatever that may be. Not only is that sad in my eyes (I pity people like that) - but it sort of bothers me.

When I joined this forum, there were many posters who debated about all kinds of topics - and those discussions were intelligent, rational and civil. Then Gary joined - and well, things started to spin out of control.

Now what I see are discussions (especially in the GM forum) that have no social redeeming value whatsoever - posts so stupid and unworthy of responses that it makes ME want to leave. . . but I don't. I keep posting in the hopes that things will improve and get better. . .

My grandfather had a favorite saying - "The scum always rises to the top." I see that happening here at DtT (have for a long time) and it concerns me...

Anyhow, it's just my opinion - no more, no less. . .

I like Gary. I think he's a hoot sometimes. And if someone gets drawn into one of his circles, I think that's the other person's fault. I have yet to see him do or say anything that warrants leaving the forum about. But then again, I've been accused of chasing folk away as well. So I guess I'm a bad judge.

Plus I joined a debate forum to disagree. If you don't want to hear an opposing viewpoint, why would you join a "debate" forum?

Although I find this kind of thread something that could be done, if essential through private messages, I am going to chime in anyhow...

I think that Gary is solid in what he believes and his worldview is not up to modification. He makes some good points and can be quite thought - provoking.

That said, I believe he ought not take what he knows of someone's personal life and use it to ridicule or as a basis to make his point. If his point is that true and worthy of demonstrating factual substance, he ought to be able to do that without using the few lives of those here at the DtT as his object lesson.

If he did not do that, perhaps one could nearly count him diplomatic, but since he does, he has become a man held in utter contempt by not a few.

I think if you let ANYBODY drive you away you are displaying a personal weakness. If you're such a "strong" poster, how could somebody like gary bother you so much?

As far as personal facts, if you don't want them mentioned on thread, don't present them there. Or at least when you mention them give a caveat. But anything I put in a regular post has cleared copywriting as far as I'm concerned. Now if there is a thread in the "off topic" section that is clearly supposed to be a "among friends" issue, that's another thing. But you won't catch me online talking about that rash on my butt that I can't get rid of. Or my multiple bankruptcies.

Since I'm one of the newer people here, I would like to echo PN that sometimes those that can't stand Gary give him a lot of free publicity. For a bunch of people that claim to dislike him so much, they talk about him incessantly and mention way too much for it to be "casual" dislike. Negative publicity is still publicity.

Is it personal weakness or strength? If I do happen to leave this forum, I WILL not be running away from something, but towards something. In other words - if I can find other forums/activities where intelligent conversation is at hand, then I will do so. I post on here mainly out of boredom - not because it's the most important activity in my daily life. . . if you get my drift.
If you're such a "strong" poster, how could somebody like gary bother you so much?
I confess that was a Freudian slip. I meant to imply "regular posters" in that remark. As to whether I am/have been a strong poster - I will be content to let others decide that (rather than go tooting my own horn). After all, I (at least) don't consider that proper forum etiquette. . .
ps - Gary doesn't really bother me. . . I've got a lot of more important things in my daily life to worry about than that (let me clue you there). I mean - the only reason I am posting right now is that it's a day off from school (know what I mean?).

Good day.
