Scam Artists
As some of you may know I work at a local resutrant in my town, and I work various jobs their including being the cashier. Most people I run into there are pleasant enough, some are out and out rude, while others try to rip you off. Well the other day this man in his 40's came up to order from me. I thought he was a bit odd, because he invaded my personal space, but I let it go. Anyway he had given me a $50 to pay for his meal which was like $8. So once he got his change, he took another $50 out of his wallet and asked me to count it to see if it was $100. He keep taking the money back and forth, and asking me to count it over and over again. I didn't really know what he wanted, and thus was hesitant at his constant requests. He made a big enough scence, that one of my co-workers came over to see what was up and to help out. So this man asks him to count the money, which he does. He says ok, sir this is $100. The man says thank you, finally, and then precedes to ask for $50, as he acts like he already gave me $50 and thus he wants change in small bills, so me and my co-workers were confused and annoyed so we just gave him the money without thinking anything of it. Well later on our managers told me, and him that my drawer was $50 short. Of course it was as he never gave me $50 to begin with to get the extra $50 from. Of course this was part of a scam ploy and actually was not my error. Basically he confused us into giving him $50, and he had done this to our manager a few months ago and got away with it. So naturally I was rather upset, feeling responsible although I knew it wasn't my fault. My manager called the next day saying to not feel bad, and that she has had similar situations before. So the thing is, this guy was a jerk, and most likely a druggy from his appearance and for what he did. Rather annoying, isn't it?

Dustin; don't be too hard on yourself about it. The sad fact is that some people are always looking to con another person out of money. Even sadder, scam artists come in many people forms; from the "druggie" to the smartly-dressed man in a Brooks Brothers suit.
I started a thread awhile back on charity frauds. Its sad that people want to help others less fortunate; only to find out that 80% of each dollar raised (sometimes more) was going into the pockets of the charities officers. When I was younger, I worked for a brokerage (mortgage) that held an annual United Way drive. Needless to say; some United Way officers were siphoning most of this money off to themselves. It started a revolt at work; andthe next year; the employees got together and refused to donate one red cent to United Way.
Money can be the root of evil (not all); but as long as you have one dollar in your pocket- there are twenty more people trying to find a way to seperate you from it. All you can do is maintain constant vigilance in any financial situation.
