Norway: Gays should be able to marry, adopt
It's good to see yet another country moving towards true equality. When will the US get with the times? Long-term, committed relationships should have equal protection under the law.

Quote:
Norway's centre-left government proposed a law Friday that would place gays on the same footing as heterosexuals when it comes to marriage and adoption and would give lesbians equal access to artificial insemination.

According to the Norwegian news agency NTB, the draft bill will probably receive the support of parliament, where the government holds 97 of 169 seats, when it comes to permitting gay marriage and adoption.

It was however less clear if parliament would back in vitro fertilisation for lesbians, NTB said.
"The lives of homosexual and of heterosexual couples are worth the same," Children and Equality minister Anniken Huitfeldt said in a statement, comparing the new law proposal with the introduction of general voting rights in Norway in 1913.

"The new law is not a weakening of the institution of marriage; rather it represents a strengthening. The value of marriage does not decrease because more people gain access to it," she insisted.

It's more about politics than anything else. Norway's government wants to be in the EU, even thought the people don't. But if you don't approve of "gay marriage" then you are homophobic.
So this is just another case of "gay marriage" being foisted upon a populous that doesn't want it.
With 85% of the population registered Lutheran, I'm sure this is just what the average Norwegian is looking for.

I talk to several Norwegians online in another forum. None of them are gay. And every last one of them has expressed support of gay marriage.

And the Norwegian Lutheran Church allows gay men and women in committed relationships to server as clergy. So the picture is not at all as you wish to paint it.

The Norwegian Lutherans allowed individual congregations to make that decision. It happened less than 6 months ago. Damn, them gays work fast.

Can you paint it any differently though. Got any numbers on the general attitude of the Norwegian people? We've had Churches in the U.S. make that decision as well against the wishes of it's members.

I've talked to several Ron Paul supporters online, yet he's not gonna be the President.

The forum that I belong to is owned by a Norwegian woman. A lot of the Norwegian members do not speak English very well so they do not participate in the English part of the board. I find it difficult to believe that the group who do participate in the English language forum just happen to favor gay marriage if the majority of the country is against it.

I don't find it difficult to believe that you believe that.

Some interesting facts about "Lutherans" in Norway.
Quote:

Although 83% of the Norwegian population belongs to the state church, only about 3% attend church services or other religious meetings more than once a month. Baptism of newborns fell from 96.8% in 1960 to 75.9% in 2005. The proportion of young people to enter into confirmation fell from 93% in 1960 to 66.2% in 2005. The proportion of all weddings to be conducted through the Church of Norway fell from 85,2% in 1960 to 45.5% in 2005. Only the proportion of funerals has remained on a high level, in 2005 93.4% of all funerals took place in the Church of Norway.
Quote:
In 2004 a survey conducted by Opinion AS showed that only 47% of the responders actually considered themselves Christians, while 49% did not consider themselves Christians. [7] Another survey conducted by Gallup International in 65 countries in 2005 found that Norway was the least religious among the Western countries surveyed, only 36% of the population considered themselves religious. However, only 9% explicitly stated that they were atheists, while the biggest group, 46%, were those that considered themselves neither religious nor atheists. [8]

Well we have a clearer picture about how Norway and religion fare. Now how about how they feel about "gay marriage"? I'm not religious, but I also don't think homosexuals qualify for "marriage". Nor did I get married in a church.

You based your entire assumption "of gay marriage being foisted upon a populous that doesn't want it" on Norwegian religious affiliations. Now that I debunked that you switch to the argument that religion is not relevant.

Typical.
