Toyota takes 1Q world sales lead from General Motors after overtaking it in production in 2007

DETROIT (AP) -- Toyota has taken the global automotive sales lead from General Motors, selling 2.41 million vehicles to GM's 2.25 million during the first three months of the year.

GM said Wednesday its first-quarter sales dropped across the globe by less than 1 percent, but Toyota said its sales were up 2.7 percent during the January-March period.

Fact: In the US auto market, health insurance costs add $1500 to the price of an average GM vehicle and $120 to the price of an average Toyota.

GM, like Ford, have become a health care provider that also makes cars.

Still oppose that there "socialised" health care??

I oppose socialized health care. You only buy a car once every few years if ever. "Socialized
health care" will come out of your check for perpetuity.
Keep it.

Domestic cars simply suck. At any price.

It doesn't surprise me. GM and Ford are consistently going forward in reverse. As fuel becomes more expensive, a higher demand is placed on efficiency. And while Honda and Toyota recognize this and are innovating in this market, all Ford and GM seem to do is market bigger and badder pick-up trucks or SUV's. Had half of their plants not moved to Mexico for bottom-priced labor costs, who knows where they might be today.

Keep it.

The vast majority of Americans buy their cars on credit, which means they are paying for GM and Ford workers health insurance every month via their car payments.

How is that different from a tax??

But even if the cars were $1500 cheaper, they would still be crap. Not to mention that domestic cars ARE cheaper when you look at comparable transaction prices on comparable models. Until this year, there was nothing in GM's stable that compared to Camry/Accord/Altima. Maybe this year with the new Malibu they'll get it right. Socialized medicine ain't gonna help anybody but GM's stockholders.
