Unhappy April 25 - National Day of Silence

Another HRC.org update. Our daughter will be participating, and by doing so, she will be in the majority in her class, I am very proud to say.

==========

HRC Back Story

Tomorrow, April 25, is the National Day of Silence, when students around the country will take a vow of silence to draw attention to anti-GLBT harassment, discrimination, and name-calling in our nation’s schools. The National Day of Silence is coordinated each year by GLSEN – the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network – and to date an estimated 500,000 students from all 50 states and Puerto Rico have participated in the event. It is critical we raise awareness of the issues facing GLBT students in schools across our nation. GLSEN’s 2005 National School Climate Survey found that 4 out of 5 GLBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety.

We're already hearing that some leaders of the anti-gay rat pack, including the homo "arm-ripping" Rev. Ken Hutcherson, are planning to protest the National Day of Silence as another evil ploy from those "sinful" homosexuals Pastor John Hagee thinks caused Hurricane Katrina to come and wipe out New Orleans. Another conservative group is planning to stage its own "Day of Truth" on Monday to "counter the promotion of the homosexual agenda and express an opposing viewpoint from a Christian perspective." So taking a day to draw attention to the rising tide of anti-gay violence in our schools and across the country constitutes promoting an agenda? Now that's a GAG.

The ignorance of these "family values" leaders is staggering. Thankfully, most Americans (including those in the public eye) refuse to follow along with their closed-minded obsession with a threatening "homosexual agenda."

Looks like you just broke your own silence pledge!

Do you also oppose "harassment, discrimination, and name-calling in our nation’s schools" for other reasons or just homosexuality?

BTW I thought you were determined to let your daughter decide things for herself?!??

The day of silence is tomorrow, gary, not today.
And in any case, I am not speaking while typing.

Yes, of course I do. Why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't anyone?

You are remembering correctly. She learned about the Day of Silence in school, and came home to tell us about it, and her plans to participate in it, along with more than half of the students in her class. I could not be more proud.

So why not dedicate the Day Of Silence to school kids who are harassed for ANY reason?

Surely that would be the tolerant non-bigoted course of action?

Day of Silence sounds like a wonderful thing, pity April 25 is Anzac Day here. I wish we had some sort of Silence Day to think about what we put gay people through each day.

Why is this national day of silence necessary? All you're going to do is cheese-off those people who are opposed to homosexual rights and marriage. It will be counterproductive - just like gay pride parades are.

It's not about gay marriage - it's about protesting the abuse of gay students in high schools

it has nothing to do with gay marriage

why should we care about people who are against gay rights? do they care about us?
