Is it possible to just debate gay marriage itself?

Ok, every topic on here that I have read (and yes, even participated in) has seemed to gravitate toward more of a debate on homosexuality itself than on the specific topic of gay marriage. That's all well and good, and I love the forum this site provides to do so, but let's try to leave this topic here as only ideas and opinions that are strictly about gay marriage, and not going into whether you think being gay is natural or unnatural, wrong or right, a mental illness or genetic trait, etc. Because those things are fun to discuss and all, but they quickly overshadow the subject of whether or not two people of the same gender should be able to marry. So I'll start with my opinions strictly on the matter of gay marriage.

I think that gays should be able to marry in my country because the country was founded on the principles of equality for all, not just a select group, or even the majority. And just like a woman should not be denied a job on the basis of her gender, that same woman should not be denied the right to marry another woman, just because she is a woman herself. Of course the same goes for men, although it seems weird to talk about a man being denied anything on the basis of his gender, but here we are. And we should not go by any religious views of who should be able to marry who, because the Constitution expressly forbids making laws based on any religion. It's one of the principles this nation was founded on.

Please, if you weigh in on any side of the debate, provide a real reason for your opinion. For example, if you think that gays marrying would somehow "destroy marriage", then please say why you think so. Thanks.

The word marriage should not be used referring to a homosexual union. It is not. If we can as a society place limits on age and family relation, then as a society we should be able to place limits on marriage as it relates to gender makeup.

I got to a restaurant that regularly serves a "marriage" of chocolate and raspberries

I've never heard anybody object to it

Not if, as the O.P. states, the country is based on equality and not the caprices and/or tyrannies of the majority.

And there are already legal gay marriages in the U.S. - have been for years.

Exactly. What "society" wants is, quite honestly, irrelevant. "Society" though it was cool to own other people at one time. Our nation is built so that we do not need to worry about what offends other people's morality, so long as we ourselves honor other people's life and liberty.

Then THAT society can allow it. It seems it's a state issue. Mine has a ban on recognizing ANYTHING gay.

We already have limitations on it as well. So it is constitutional. And since marriage has been allowed as young as 13, even before the age of consent in many states, it has nothing to do with "adults".

Obviously it does depend on what society thinks. You guy aren't married cept in one state and a few countries. Society seems to matter a bit.

I agree - it is a state issue

however - the federal government should be recognizing ALL legal state marriages, as it IS a state issue.

See "Roe vs. Wade" for evidence that it doesn't have to stay a state's issue. Other than that, what are you trying to say?

And as soon as the law is changed..it'll be changed. But people will still be bitching. Maybe it won't be changed? Who knows. I don't see why it should.
