I read an interesting feminist essay about the violent origins of the word. Apparently it is related to an anglo-saxon word which means "to beat."

Personally, I don't see why it's such a big deal in and of itself, although if I had a small child, I wouldn't want him running around shouting it. I am generally against censorship.

I am like you: generally against censorship. I of course don't allow my children to say certain words (at least in front of me) because of the nature of the parent/child relationship and the boundaries we need to keep in place.
But the problem with people throwing words like this around copiously is that the words ultimately lose their value as expletives.
And what do we have left for those crisis moments when there are no expletives left ?
