| The above-displayed photographs have been circulating on the Internet since at least 2004, usually in e-mail forwards that set them in one of several Arab/Muslim areas (e.g., Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Palestinian territories) and claim that the boy pictured is being punished under a harsh sharia law system that imposes a penalty grossly out of proportion to the nature of the crime (i.e., having his arm crushed under a vehicle because he stole a loaf of bread). What the photographs actually depict (according to the operator of the site that originally published them) is performers hustling money from onlookers by staging an act, one in which a subject seemingly allows himself to be run over by a heavy vehicle and then emerges unscathed. (Note the man with the microphone in the first picture, who drums up business and describes the action for observers. Also note the blanket placed under the boy's arm — not a consideration persons intent on severely punishing a lawbreaker would be likely to provide.) This a common illusion, variations of which are performed by many magicians and accomplished through a variety of means, with no lasting harm done. That the subject is a small boy who grimaces his way through the stunt is all part of the act, intended to elicit sympathy and extra cash — despite his contorted facial expressions, the boy is not seriously hurt. The versions of these photographs circulated via e-mail generally leave out the last pictures of the original series, which show the same boy after the conclusion of the stunt: ![]() Urban Legends Reference Pages: Islamic Justice "(Gay marriage) is a debate about whether you think gay people are part of the human condition or just a random fetish." -- Jon Stewart "Please don't judge others by your own standards." -- Garysher | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Fuckin primitives... i never seen insanity like this in real life... but i know it happens even here in pakistan. Wrongful application of an islamic principle is what it is. The Islamic principle is that a man's hand should be cut off. Some baboons insist on taking that literally... but in arabic "cutting off a man's hand means preventing him from taking a particular action. Like putting him in jail. PS i jsut read foundit's explanation of the pictures.. it makes more sense.. but nevertheless the above point stands. Love for all, Hatred for none | |||||||||||||||||||||

I saw the blanket and thought is that so they can sleep at night thinking it would be less cruel? Just made me hotter.... Unless the sensible Muslims speak up this is what the non muslim world will think "normal" muslims are. I am glad hkbajwa had the reaction he did.... maybe the war on terror will be won by Muslims...the sensible ones, they just need to find thier voice. Likewise we need the full backing of moderate Muslims. But the language we use and the actions we carry out certainly isn't gaining the support of the moderate Muslim community but rather the direct opposite; pitting them against us and many of them are joining the radical rings. The problem is, is that we have people like Alias in power (who called for the genocide of hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Muslim nations) that think this is a conventional war. Consequently we have many innocents being killed, many tortured, and funding focused on the occupation and building of permanent bases rather than rebuilding the country. We also have a president who keeps proclaiming that you're either with him or with the terrorists. Moderate muslims then look around at what the President is proclaiming as "a good job" (which in reality is bloodshed and torture) and thinks, 'well I'm certainly not with you'. And unfortunately many make the connection that they have to be with the terrorists to push out the Americans. Because right now Bush is saying Iraq is peachy and we brought freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people; well the Iraqi people see more death, torture, and oppression than under Saddam and as you can imagine are therefore getting a really bad impression of freedom and democracy. So I think the first and foremost thing we need to do is have an administration that is truthful, upfront, and dedicated to true change in Iraq rather than control of Iraq. But most of all, since this is a war of ideology, we definetly need to be careful with our language. No more of this "bring 'em on" stuff from our leaders.
