Inmate kills self 18 hours before execution date
Now I have honestly no idea why he would do this....Anyone have any ideas?

Inmate kills self hours before execution - Crime & Punishment - MSNBC.com

LIVINGSTON, Texas - A death-row inmate slit his own throat with a makeshift knife early Thursday, committing suicide less than 18 hours before he was scheduled to be executed, a prison official said.

Michael Dewayne Johnson, 29, was on death row for the 1995 killing of a convenience store clerk near Waco.

He was in a death-row cell early Thursday when he slashed his own throat with a makeshift blade fashioned from a small piece of metal attached to a wooden stick, said Michelle Lyons, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville.

Prison guards had been checking on Johnson’s welfare every 15 minutes, as is customary, when they found him unresponsive in a pool of blood in his cell, Lyons said. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Livingston, where he was pronounced dead, Lyons said.

Johnson’s execution had been scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday. His last-minute appeal was still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Was this the first attempt to execute him?
Sometimes, inmates are put on death row and their execution is postponed due to additional legal questions that are to be addressed. The thought of not being sure at your own end can be stressful.

Or, the very thought of waiting for his execution could have been too much for him. The article states that it is "customary" for the guards to check on him every 15 minutes. I suspect that is because he was scheduled for execution that day.
And I suspect that this sort of thing is precisely why they check so frequently...

What a travesty. Who can we blame for this? This was cruel and inhumane punishment he inflicted upon himself. We must outlaw this.

Johnson apparently scrawled words in blood on the wall of his cell, but prison officials would not say what he wrote.
Why are they keeping this to themselves? What did he write? This may provide a clue as to the reason he killed himself rather than allow the state to do it.

He is at least the seventh condemned man in Texas to take his own life since death row reopened in 1974.
How many in the US have done this?

Oh wait, that was in The Shining...

I think he just wanted to cheat the gallows in his own inimitable style.. or the guard did it because he was sick of listening to him hum to himself day after day.

Maybe give all death row inmates the option to do it themselves. Save the tax payers some money.
