Positive Campaign
Found this on cnn.com:

Quote:
Believe it or not: Vt. candidates refrain from personal attacks
WOODSTOCK, Vermont (AP) -- Perhaps it's Vermont's famous maple syrup or the Ben and Jerry's ice cream, but this year's campaign for the state's only House seat is almost sweet.

In an election season noted for its vitriol, Republican Martha Rainville and Democrat Peter Welch said they wanted to run campaigns free of personal attacks -- and that's what they've done.

The race's detour onto the high road is particularly noteworthy because the contest is for an open seat being vacated by Rep. Bernie Sanders, an independent who is running for the Senate. Party leaders and the campaigns of the House candidates say it's the only contested race in the country accentuating the positive.

Has anyone noticed this race? Is it really a positive campaign?

I'm not from Vermont, so I am not familiar with this election; but if these candidates refrained from the personal attacks that have become part of the American way of life; then more power to them! Hopefully, other politicians will get the message:STICK TO THE ISSUES!

According to the Vermont Guardian, the nice man won. I read about half the article, but it didn't mention the campaign as being a positive one. Sigh. We need more nice people in our government, not nasty ones.

Wait, I did a search on the page for "positive" and came up with this, about halfway down the page:

Quote:
Nationally, Vermont’s campaign for the open seat in Congress was seen as the most positive in a year of negative ads.
<snip>
We’ve received compliments across this state for running a positive issues oriented campaign. Because we knew Vermonters demanded it, they wanted it, and once again Vermont is setting a standard about how political debate should occur on very tough issues,” Welch told an enthusiastic throng of voters election night.
<snip>
Welch said he and Rainville had a brief discussion and he thanked her for running a clean campaign.

Both ran an issues-oriented campaign, but on key issues like the war in Iraq, Welch struck out early with a clear position on getting troops out of Iraq and calling for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to be fired.
I think the two candidates should be congratulated for giving their fellow citizens the kind of campaign we all want. Here's their contact info from Congress.org (I hope their offices are deluged with mail!):

It appears that Martha Rainville's website has already been taken down, which makes me wonder if the rest of the contact info is still valid.
