USN & USAF Infantry Units
There are talks that the United States Navy and Air Force may soon be required to establish and maintain infantry units of their own, due to the over tasked, over taxed state of the Army & Marine Corps currently deployed in the Middle East. Some of the men on the ground over there have been there and back 4 times since this war began, it's getting ridiculous. However the idea of The Navy & Air Force having infantry units is a ridiculous solution. Naval Infantry? That's what the Marine Corps was established for, they are a part of the DoN. The Majority of the Sailors from my base have been deployed to Iraq to augment Marine Corps Ground forces in Iraq.

What do you think?

Rebuilding America's Defenses
A good discussion of what needs to be done can be found here:

http://www.newamericancentury.org/de...alsecurity.htm

There are two documents on this page, both of which should be downloaded and read.

Some of the questions being raised in this thread are discussed here.

Actually Naval Infantry makes PERFECT sense. It's called the U.S. Marine Corps.

Yeah, it's not at all uncommon for Sailors to operate on the ground as a part of Marine Corps Units, SeaBee Units or SpecOps, but a Naval Infantry amounts to a second Marine Corps...

All Marine Corps Chaplaiins are guarded by sailors as well. The Navy has a job specialty called a Religious Programs Specialist, they serve as an aide to the Chaplain, but more importantly they serve as highly combat trained body guards, since Chaplains are not legally allowed to carry weapons or engage in combat action.

I suppose that makes the secondary purpose...
