Cool Why is homo a slur?
yet homosexual is considered an accolade - at least by most homosexuals!

So how can an abbreviation of the word become a slur?

As a British citizen should I be offended if you call me a Brit instead of a Briton?

What is homo is being used as an abbreviation of homophobic?

And if we are going to allow special interest groups such as the homosexual activists to hijack the English language, I would like to designate some other words which we should now decree to be slurs.

For example, a word like homophobic is a slur when used to denigrate and dehumanise someone who happens to be exercising their freedom of expression by believing that homosexuality is immoral

It's the intent behind the word. The definitions are largely defined by society and contemporary culture. Before, "gay" was used to define something as "happy" or "joyous", now obviously it means something different to people.

Likewise, "Jackass" and "Bitch" had different meanings (and at least dog shows continue to use the latter's alternate meaning).

I don't think homophobic is a slur. I guess it could be used as one, taking into consideration the intent of the user.

well, I had to take you off ignore to see what thread you had posted - it was hardly worth it.

why is it? who knows. But it is....read the Oxford English Dictionary - it makes the definition quite clear

why are you bringing this up on this forum - you've gone over this with people for about five years - and you always lose.

do you have any purpose in life other than to troll and bait quarrels?

back to ignore with you, troll

it's not a slur - it's a scientific term used to describe people who believe EXACTLY as you stated.

Everyperson who is reasonable and cares about the good of the world, wants peace. And it is pretty clear we can't do much about it when there are so many wars...but in as much as we can all do our part to be peaceful with one another, even if it does or does not make sense to us, just call someone what THEY want to be called.
Why is that so hard?

It is not a matter of dissing what is politcally correct. It is a matter of very simply and with a clean heart, caring enough to demonstrate respect for folk.

What is the big deal you say about using the word Homo? Well I say what is the big deal about NOT using it?
You are making it as much an issue as the ones who ask you to please not say it.

Give peace a chance, everybody...

So you agree that the word homophobic dehumanises people who happen to believe homosexuality is immoral?

In other words you are trying to dictate a moral code on those people - the very thing you whine about all day long!

But don't you think this is an issue of freedom of expression? That people have a free choice to believe homosexuality is immoral, and resist the hijacking of the language by special interest groups?

Other examples of this insidious encroachment on the language are expressions like:
pro choice
pro life
gay
undocumented worker

All are carefully chosen to sound so warm and fuzzy, how could anyone object to the mindset they actually portray!

It really doesnt make any sense that the abbreviation of a word becomes a slur, whilst the word in full is not! And I think it's time the people who find "homo" objectionable practised a little maturity and tolerance.

Hasta manana
