So, I'd expect it to be active until at least 2010.
But, you aught to keep your eye on this project: Overwhelmingly Large Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"If (the 100 meter version is built), it would be the largest optical telescope ever constructed. It has been claimed that OWL would have a greater mirror surface area than that of all previous professional telescopes combined." |

The possibilities are actually infinite.
