Fourteenth Amendment

I sent this Email to my Congressional District Representative:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have followed along the efforts of Representative Candice Miller in changing the word "persons" to "citizens" in the fourteenth amendment. She had testified, at a hearing of the SUBCOMMITTEE ON FEDERALISM AND THE CENSUS, concerning House Joint Resolution 53 (presently House Joint Resolution 6): "The 14th Amendment to the Constitution states that in the census that all persons must be counted. All persons include men and women, rich and poor, black and white, every person. However, many would be surprised to know it also means citizens and non-citizens – including illegal immigrants. In fulfilling its Constitutional obligation, the U.S. Census Bureau counts every person whether they are in this county legally or not. Those same numbers which include both legal and illegal immigrants are then used to determine Congressional representation."

I am sure you are aware of the fact that corporations have also claimed personhood under the aegis of the fourteenth amendment. Corporations have always been recognized as persons, albeit artificial persons.

The fourteenth amendment was drafted, and ratified, as an effort to recognize the newly freed black race as citizens of the United States, in defiance of the opinion in the Dred Scott case. This having been accomplished, I see no further need for the fourteenth amendment, and, rather than just changing a word in the amendment, I am suggesting that the fourteenth amendment be repealed, and I am calling for your effort toward this end.
