I guess I don't get it, are these people who were put to death in prison?

Many of us here are anti-death penalty.

Many of us here are anti-death penalty.

We have a long history of miscarriages of justice, some of which have ended in execution, others that have (recently) been so wrong, it has undermined the whole concept of "justice".
Having said that, it would be wrong to portray us Brits as unanimous about the issue. There are many who protest pretty vociferously about the reinstatement of the death penalty.
I think that it's easy for some of us Brits, therefore, to take the high moral ground on this (Over the US)

I don't get it either, Tad.

No, all of them were not executed, but they were wrongly (allegedly) convicted....in that they were released years later on technicalities.
Had the Death sentence been in force, then they would have been hung and it would all have been too late..

He has missed out Hanratty, who WAS hung......and the evidence against him was very shoddy, although the police keep trotting out proof....but there is lots of proof that he was never anywhere near the crime scene, which was not made available at his trial.

Derek Bentley, who had a mental age of 11 and suffered from epilepsy was hung...and he did not kill anyone, but his friend, Craig, who DID do the shooting was under 18 at the time (he was 16) , and so could not receive the Death sentence. He served 10 years in prison instead.

Yes, there have been many bad things, and I certainly do not agree with the Death Sentence anyway.

The hanging of Timothy Evans was the trigger for the repeal of the Death sentence law. He was another mentally deficient, and it was his Landlord, the infamous Christie who had done the murder.

The hanging of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hung, also caused public outrage.
They who walk in silence hang the innocent and set the guilty free.
