Points: 14,720, Level: 78 | Level up: 79%, 130 Points needed | | Is Ethanol fuel worse for the enviroment? When considering ethanol as an alternative fuel we must weigh all the factors. The number one factor should be if E-85 is better for the environment than gas. The numbers show that cars burnng E-85 get worse gas mileage than straight gasoline. This means we must fill our tanks more often which means more carbon maybe put into the air. E-85 also costs more, if you don't apply the tax credits currently used by makers of the fuel. These credits are due to expire this year and, unless they are renewed we will pay more for this fuel than straight gas. Also a consideration is the tax cut given to fuel stations for selling this fuel, which motivates the media backing of this fuel.
This subject is certainly important and should be studied a great deal more before we commit to it's total use.
For me the answer lies in electric cars. Gas Mileage of Flexible-Fueled Vehicles USATODAY.com - Cost of E85 fuel is higher than gasoline E85 Tax Incentives

Level up: 44%, 94 Points needed | | its all crap i tell you, we are better off breaking into mexican food resturants and stealing their cooking oil and using that. Its a nice alternative fuel, and smells like tortillas when you burn it lol

More indepth studies are needed.

Ethanol is considered Carbon neutral because the carbon it puts out is about equal to that which the corn from which it was made absorbed while growing...
The problem is that there are a large number of ethanol plants popping up, and many of them are Burning Coal. You see the corn needs to be heated in the process to make it ethanol... There are cleaner ways to do it, but coal is cheap... It's that coal that robs ethanol of it's environmental value... |

Using recycled cooking oil is a great idea but in the end there is not nearly enough to power the cars on the road. Much more corn oil must be made to go that route. Maybe I misread the articles but that is the way I understood it.
