Thomas Jefferson: Author of America
written by Christopher Hitchens, copyright 2005 by Christopher Hitchens, published by HarperCollins Publishers.

This book is in the Eminent Lives series, which is described as "ideal introductions designed to appeal to the general reader, student and scholar".

I have to disagree with that, as I have found the reading of this book to be quite laborious.

If you are looking for a general background on Thomas Jefferson, this biography isn't it. What this book provides is a critical view of the actions of Thomas Jefferson throughout his life and of his part in the shaping of America.
Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.
Albert Einstein

Hans Küng: "There will be peace on earth when there is peace among the world religions."

Did you know that when Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the constitution he was drinking beer in a tavern?

Don't you mean the Declaration of Independence?

And where did you hear that from? That doesn't sound right.

I read it in a book, "The Bathroom Reader". Lots of facts about lots of things. Benjamin Frankling is quoted as saying that beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Ever hear of Samual Adams? All them founding fathers were beer drinkers and a lot of them even had their own brew house on their property. There have probably been more political deals made under the influence of Beer or liquor than anyone would think.

Yeah, and a lot of them were slave traders and owners too. Now there's a fun fact.

But, does that book say that Jefferson drafted the constitution??

So what if they were slave traders or slave owners. They were also great men and smart men. I might be confused. It was either the constitution or the declaration of independance. I will have to find it.

Jefferson is quoted saying:

"Ignorance is preferable to error, and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing than he who believes what is wrong. "

Not exactly " ignorance is bliss, " but a good prescription for many of the political pundits to weigh. Sometimes saying, " I don't know! " is a more purely shown truth than everything else that gets said.

Might be a bit of a digression here, but I have long embraced that quote and felt to share it here.
