The relation to this topic lies int he fact that it is likely that the puritanical ethic may be deeply entrenched in american society. And today's neo-con, evangelical, theological movement is an indication of the pervasive influence of that line of thought.

Is it not possible that the puritans also wished to establish a theocracy in the US, but was unable to do so due to the exceptionally diverse mix of cultures that constituted the new America. Of course this is pure speculation, but something that may be worth considering.

How close to todays ideals of american society were the settlers really?
Isn't it kind of funny that here in New England, where the Puritans were a major influence, is now a very liberal area...? I can't say the neo-conservatives are totally in-line with the Puritans ideals as they were very community oriented. Their purpose, as stated by John Winthrop aboard the Arbella, the following sermon.

A Modell of Christian Charity

Though strongly religious, I do not see that Christians of the neo-conservative political view are quite like the Puritans.
Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.

I could agree more.

We're talking about two separate entities here.

Well, I got the book from the library the other day. I'm reading it still. Some of the ideas presented are pretty scary, but I think that's the purpose of the book, to be a big wake up call not only to the left, but also the moderates.

It reminds me of the poem that goes something like "they came for ... but I didn't speak up because I wasn't a ..."

Variations of this poem can be found at:
