As Congress prepares to probe Supreme Court nominee John Roberts's leanings on this or that constitutional question, it should not overlook a larger concern about the Supreme Court as an institution. The court is in desperate need of reform; it has become increasingly isolated, imperious and opaque. This is no accident. It follows largely from the assumption, nurtured by the media and embraced by the justices, that they hold "lifetime" appointments. But it is time to rethink this assumption. And there is some reason for optimism that Roberts himself might agree and make a unique personal contribution to bringing about overdue change. The power of Supreme Court justices today is epic in scale. The cases they hear involve the most difficult and contentious questions before the nation. An alphabetical list would begin with abortion and proceed through campaign finance, church-state relations, euthanasia, pornography, presidential selection and voting rights. And once appointed and confirmed, the members of the court who engage these momentous issues are able to do so for as long as they please. A Court Too Supreme For Our Good Long-lived precedent: John Marshall served as chief justice from 1801 until his death in 1835, setting the pattern of lifetime tenure for Supreme Court justices. The ancient Greeks used to say, "You shall know a man by the friends that he keeps." Given the nature of their friends and advisers, what are we to conclude about the Republican party: Stop the madness before us it stops! Funny how you twist the actual facts around just as an oppertunity to bash 'republicans'...Rather then stating misinformation as fact, try posting the actual truth about a situation. Terri Schiavo was brain dead. And the so called 'republicans', didn't starve her to death. In fact, thanks to the President and his brother, as well as their cronies, they did their best to interfer with the husband's rights to make the choice. Everytime the hubby tried to end his wife's life in a merciful manner (by her wishes to not be kept alive if ever in a vegetative state), her parents appealled to the Govenor (Bush's brother) and the 'republican' would issue orders not allowing the husband to let his wife die. The so called republicans you're trying to blame for her death, did the opposite to what you claim they did. They PROLONGED her families suffering by trying to continue the artificial life support, not discourage it's useage. In otherwords, the 'republicans' tried to keep the tube in, not remove it. | The word "fascist" must be the only word in your personal dictionary. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

Yeah, his is a very limited one, though. I suppose that if one of us were to say that when a traffic light turns green, he would say that we should go on red. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
