I doubt any liquid could get hot enough to melt sweatpants. By that time it would turn to steam. |

I once stuck my hand into the coals of a camp fire. You would expect 3rd degree burns from that, but I only got severe 2nd degree. The length of time of contact with the skin has a lot to do with the severity of the burns.

I do remember when I spilled the water on my leg, my leg was bare, but I had a shoe on, and I was more concerned with getting the shoe off because it seemed to be burning hotter. |

OK, let's say they make really bad coffee at McDonald's (a perfectly feasible possibility) and use boiling water. That's 100 degrees, so it can't possibly be MORE than that. Fluff, your science is way off. The boiling point for liquids is 212 degrees Farenheit.
Now, if the law says it should be served 50 degrees LESS than that, that's 50 degrees - which is drinkable, but a pretty darned cold starting point for a coffee, though still marginally better than the tepid coffee I mentioned if it was 50 degrees less than 90 (that would be 40 - really tepid).
I don't want boiling coffee, but I don't want cold coffee either! | Now this I agree with. If I wanted iced coffee, Starbuck's practically introduced this phenomenom to America. I expect my coffee hot; not boiling; but hot.
Now, I do agree that the woman had a claim. I just think the McDonald's should have been ordered to pay for her medical bills, replacing her clothing, any lost wages, and her legal fees. Lawsuits have just gotten so darn frivolous these days, was the point I was trying to make originally. How did we get to this point?
The other case with my friend is just crazy. But, you know, with the right lawyer anything can happen!

I was lucky in that when I fell into the fire, it was late December and there were a lot of melted snow puddles around the fire pit. I immediately stuck my hand into the closest one. That was the only thing that stopped the burning process at second degree. I still had to have it debrieded at the ER, an experience I DON'T recommend, but I didn't have to have skin grafts.
