Fantastic - thanks for that, Forester!

I like the version of zero being the temperature at which someone *might* freeze to death, and the other fixed point being the temperature of horse blood

Now that's what I call hard science

Ah, OK, I'd forgotten about the US temperature scale being different. I have no idea what fifty US degrees are, I'm afraid! I'm used to 0=freezing, 100=boiling.

Why 212 degrees for boiling, incidentally? Anyone know? It seems a very strange "unround" number!
I'm not 100% positive, but I'm sure the espresso coming out of an espresso machine is over 150 degrees. I know for a FACT that milk more a drink is often steamed into the 140 - 160 degree range.

Okay, my buddy left earlier; but he did show me the denial letter from the insurance company. It turns out that this accident does fall in the category of property damage liability. They have no problem with that. What they are refuting is the amount attached to the damage of the tree-$60,000. I would be a little hard pressed myself to believe the "appeal value" of this tree being that amont. Anyway, his mother has already gotten real estate comps for that are and has retained a lawyer. This is the frivolity of lawsuits that I'm talking about.

$60,000 for appeal value on a tree?

Okay, yeah, I might agree that oak trees are pretty, but the do not increase the value of a house by $60,000.

Hmmm, yep. Just a tad bit overboard there with the value of the tree...

It's going to cost more for going to court, then if the homeowners had just accepted the original property damage amount...Now anything they would have gained, is going to the lawyers instead...

I don't know where this took place.

But here in New Haven, a large well-shaped healthy tree could well add that much value to a home.

Here in cities, old beautiful trees are rare.

Tristan, when in the NE area, like in Boston, do the leaves start turning brown for fall colors? I will be visiting Boston from 09/25 to 10/1.

hmmmmm

you MAY be a little early - we have the most color on the trees right around Hallowe'en. But it could be different in Boston.

right here in New Haven, the end of September is juuuuuuust starting to turn fall-like.

ask milkbone - not only is he in that area - but he's got a garden business, so he'd really know about the season's turning right there in Boston

H80, the farther north you get, the earlier the trees change.

Here in Lower Michigan, the color tours are usually between mid October to late October. But in the UP it's usually in mid-September it starts.

Also, I don't know if you are aware of it, but if you have a pretty dry summer the colors in fall won't be as vibrant.
