So close, yet so far

Last week I visited the JFK Library and Museum. What an experience that was. Sad to see his life cut so short back in 1963. I spent a few hours inside that place.

My sister was telling me after I got home from my flights across the country that our mom told her that our dad would not be coming home that night since he was still working at the local newspaper company, doing the story on the tragic event that day. I remember that we both grieved that day.

Yada Yada Yada. Illegal war, illegal war, illegal war. Like a broken record. When asked for proof all you give is the same rhetoric or post a link to a document filed against the First Bush presidency that was laughed out of every court it was every submitted.

Newsflash, and this is always the hardest one for you to get over. If a country signs a cease fire agreement with another country and then violates said agreement, the former country has a right under international law to resume hostilities.

HMMMMM, how many chances were given?? How many UN Resolutions were violated.

Oh well, when faced with the truth, you will just shout louder.

We went to war with Iraq because Saddam did not step down...

474 days until...nothing really. Nothing substantial will essentially change. Goodbye Bushites, hello Clintonites. Two sides of the same coin.

The truth is, no matter how much you want to spin it, this war was an act of aggression.

You remind me of Bushites attempting to justify the legality (and somehow the humanity) of torture by running us through a loophole in semantics of them being deemed "enemy combatants" (not civilians and not soldiers).

Even if the Iraq war were technically legal by word (which, incidentally it isn't [as, among other things, it breaches the UN Charter accounting for a war of aggression, and there of course was no formal declaration of war by Congress, unless, of course, you really don't think this is a war at all? Plus according to the congressional 'authorization' for force, in Section 3 paragraph b that Bush was required to prove to the Congress that Iraq was still in violation of UN resolutions by possessing weapons of mass destruction, and more importantly that Iraq was connected to international terrorist organizations including those responsible for 9/11; and that any peaceful measure would not be adequate in enforcing UN resolutions [which, of course we now know that war was used as a first resort, not a last]]), it still would violate the true meaning and intent behind international law, because it is still a war of aggression.

Therefore, even if you were right, which you're not; it would still be considered 'illegal war' because of it's violation of the spirit and intent of international law. Germany gave us a BS account for the legality of the attack on Poland because of Poland's (and the communists') alleged terrorist attacks on Germany (which we now know as a fabrication by Himmler), as well as Poland and the east's 'threat' on Germany and the western nations. But we knew it was a bunch of smoke and mirrors. It was still a war of aggression, and therefore illegal in the international community's books.

That's pretty simplistic. The war authorization was given because Bush (in order to make war) was going to prove to Congress that 1) Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and 2) that Iraq was connected to international terrorist groups including those connected to the attacks on 9/11. Of course, Bush did neither one...he had an ulterior motive toward conquering Iraq which was made evident by his discussions since the day he took office (before and right after the attacks on 9/11, [of course, right after winning an election on the policy of non-interventionism]) as we now know from accounts such from such people as Mickey Herskowitz and Paul O'Neill and countless others who have came out with books scrutinizing Bush's long-had ulterior motives to war with Iraq. Of course, we now know that Bush and his fellow neo-conservative thinkers were discussing how Iraq was connected to 9/11 and how they could sell it to the public for a pretext to war almost immediately following the events.

The authorization was given for those reasons, but the true causes of why we went to war is much more complex. Perhaps it could have been a mixture of attempting to establish a 'beachhead' for American 'democracy' and economic domination of potential lucrative markets. Maybe it was about securing control of the oil reserves, thereby undermining OPEC and getting leverage against the emerging superpowers of China and India. Or perhaps it was also in part to prevent Saddam's intentions on switching their oil transactions from the dollar over to the Euro, thereby setting an 'example' for oil nations not to do that (which many at the time were considering and, although delayed, are still and will still consider doing), thus extending the already short life of the US dollar.
