Yes. I am saying THE MAJORITY of those people were unemployed and on welfare of some kind. I'll stand by that until proven otherwise.

According to Houston Wants Katrina Evacuees to Move On - Newsweek Hurricane Katrina Coverage - MSNBC.com there were "more than 150,000 survivors" that Houston "housed, fed and mended". The story was from March 13, 2006.

If we use 150,000 as the number of evacuees, then slightly more than 75,000 would be the majority.

According to New Orleans unemployment spikes to 6.2 percent New Orleans CityBusiness - Find Articles "... the New Orleans MSA unemployment rate for January was 6.2 percent with 37,809 unemployed." The article got its info from the Louisiana Department of Labor.

I have not found numbers for August 2005, but it appears from "Chart 2 Unemployment Rates in Louisiana and Mississippi" on EconSouth, Vol. 8, No. 1 that it is about the same rate (6%).

Since a majority of 75,000 is greater than 37,809 unemployed (and likely on welfare), I believe you are incorrect.

I'd venture a guess that the vast majority WERE unemployed before the hurricane. Yes.

The ancient Greeks used to say, "You shall know a man by the friends that he keeps." Given the nature of his friends and advisors, what are we to conclude about George W. Bush:
Stop the madness before us it stops!
Σταματήστε την τρέλα προτού να μας σταματήσεϊ Greek

So you think there were over 75,000 unemployed by August 2005 when only 37,809 were unemployed in January. Might happen. Maybe. Would have to have some big employers laying off.. likely that'd have been in the news. Prove it, Jefferson.

There's no way to prove that, other than by having access to welfare records that are protected by privacy rights - and you know it.

But please explain to me WHY these New Orleans evacuees are such criminals? And don't give me the old, "They can't get jobs" BS. It doesn't fly. There are jobs EVERYWHERE.

Criminals are criminals wherever they live.
Hard workers are hard workers wherever they live.

It's time to stop making cry-baby excuses for these people who are STILL unemployed over a year after they were "displaced". There's NO MAGIC WAND!

They need to get off their lazy asses and get jobs. Period!

You know how I found jobs? I went and found them. I moved across the country a couple times. Some of these people want someone else to do all the leg work and then they expect to just show up and get paid. I've seen these kinds of people all my life. They live off liberal's bleeding hearts who spend other people's money to take care of them and they know how to play the victim very well.

Exactly the same for me.

In fact, I just moved to a different city in a different state a couple weeks ago. HUGE move because my family had lived in the same place for over 17 years. Selling our current home, finding one to rent - possibly buy, securing employment, etc.

The people that say it can't be done are full of crap. Pure, unadulterated CRAP.

So that was pure speculation on your part, which is not really a good debating tactic. And there are aggregate statistics published by local governments which do not use individual welfare records, except to count them. This is the type of statistics that I'd expected you to find.

As for "why these New Orleans evacuees are such criminals"... well, I try not to generalize about people. Sometimes they change. And we don't know each person's situation. We don't know that those who are still unemployed are sitting on their "lazy asses" expecting someone else to support them. We haven't interviewed them.

I myself respond better to encouragement than to criticism. Perhaps others do as well.

I do sense in your tone that you are angry about the situation. Why?

He's probably angry because he works for a living and has to pay high taxes to take care of those who will not work. I can understand that. I think we should do what the bible says......if you don't work, you don't eat. I bet we'd hear some realy crying then.
