"The version of the detainee bill now in the Senate not only undoes much of the McCain-Warner-Graham work, but it is actually much worse than the administration’s first proposal. In one change, the original compromise language said a suspect had the right to “examine and respond to” all evidence used against him. The three senators said the clause was necessary to avoid secret trials. The bill has now dropped the word “examine” and left only “respond to.”

In another change, a clause said that evidence obtained outside the United States could be admitted in court even if it had been gathered without a search warrant. But the bill now drops the words “outside the United States,” which means prosecutors can ignore American legal standards on warrants.

The bill also expands the definition of an unlawful enemy combatant to cover anyone who has “has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States.” Quick, define “purposefully and materially.” One person has already been charged with aiding terrorists because he sold a satellite TV package that includes the Hezbollah network.

The bill simply removes a suspect’s right to challenge his detention in court. This is a rule of law that goes back to the Magna Carta in 1215. That pretty much leaves the barn door open. "
One of the frustrating things is how people remove these rights from people, ignoring concepts like "innocent until proven guilty" or "habeas corpus", and they give no good reason for doing so other than their convenience.

They feel inconvenienced by standards of human rights, so they throw them out the window.
Does it help national security? Don't make me laugh.
They just want to have their actions allowed WITHOUT QUESTION.
And they lost that right when they ran for an elected office...

And further examples of Alias "shooting the messenger"...
Do you have anything pertinent to say regarding the actual MESSAGE?

Or is all you are capable of is insulting the messenger?

Do you have any comments on MY statements?
Or is all your talk just an attempt to distract from the point?

Molly Ivins...

What did you EXPECT her to write? That she thinks Bush did something RIGHT? Of course, she MIGHT have written something positive, but it would only have been because it was plagairised. She apparently has a little problem with that.

And isn't she the one who had to apologize, and retract her statement, after wrongly saying that there were more civilian casualties in Iraq due to the war, than were caused by Saddam Hussein?

Yeah, she's a gem.

But I digress. Here's a short list of Molly Ivins' OBJECTIVE writings:
- Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America
- Pipe Dreams: Greed, Ego, and the Death of Enron
- The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President (2001)
- Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush

On the other hand, this is an interesting article - if only for its entertainment value, and the soon-to-be-released retraction and apology.

Anyone who would take Molly Ivins seriously is either brain damaged or a liberal.

Perhaps Bush will dissolve Congress, declare martial law, and set himself up as President for Life?

What a shame. We didn't even make the 500 year mark as a civilized society.

The coming law gives the President the power to imprison US citizens as well as foreign nationals, and not just under arms, but at His discretion.

Furthermore, if imprisoned at said whim, you have no right to challenge Him. You, a U.S. citisen, would remain imprisoned until such time as the President decided you could be released, if ever.

No court.
No evidence.
No lawyer.

Just you, sitting in a cell, being tortured (if He so wishes), until you die or He decides you can go home, whichever comes first.

Oh yeah baby. We can hardly wait until Bush burns the constitution and declares himself king. It's coming man. All us in the red states are just waiting for the signal from Rumsfeld. I got my secret code ring just a few days ago. We have Fox news ready to send the secret signal at the right time. You will miss it because none of you watch Bill O'Reilly. It is going to be on his show at a secret time and only the conservatives know the password. All the other news services will go blank and only Fox news will be on. You wont even know what happened until it's all over. If you've bought a TV within the last 6 years we already know where you are because of hidden cameras relayed to to the NSA. We've been tapping your phones right after Bush hired those muslims to fly into the WTC and the demolition happened. Wooooeeeee, man are we gonna party soon. yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaa
