Just my opinion but I am in favor of at least partial privatization. Here is why.
My father passed away this past August(Alzheimers and yes it sucks to see someone you love go through that). 2 1/2 months in a hospice at around $100-$150 a day(mom's portion,Medicare took care of the other half). The funeral cost $13,500.With all the other expenses of this ordeal, mom had to pay out over $26,000 this past year for dads medical expenses.
She got a check from Social Security for $255(death benefit).
In Galveston in the early 80's they opted out of SS through a loophole that has since been closed. A womans husband died at 38 years old in a car accident. Within days (according to the article i read) she had a check for $126,000(death benefit). She used this to pay off funeral expenses and go back to school so she could provide for their son.
My father was 85 and worked his entire life, even after he retired.
Which one seems to be the better deal?
Easy answer, at least from my point of view.

I just don't understand why everyone thinks Bush is going to destroy social security. You know what, I hope whoever paid social security in there lifetime does get their benefits, but I hope to see this system 100% privatized in the near future. It's common sense but many people in this world hate improvement and would rather stick with the old programs. Psh...

I think part of the answer can be traced back to the election. There was such an anti-Bush hatred from the candidates that it trickled down to the Democrats base constituency that now anything that Bush comes out with ,in their opinion is bad for the country and they are against it.

Been like this for decades. Sucks but I guess we will just have to deal with it.

They hate it when I say, "cry...cry"

Try it!

I asked my friend who was a democrat that question. He said the easiest way to fix this problem is to just raise the percentage taken out of your check for social security (20% he suggested).

I honestly think that idea is outrageous.

Seems that's all they want to do. Or so called, "Take from the rich".

I am not rich but it's common sense that if you take away from the wealthy "over 90% business owners"..you should know what the outcome is.

Unemployment rises

True
People should be able to be responsible for their own retirements if they wish, or opt out of the current system if they feel like it. I mean It is america, I believe in freedom of choice. And if you are going whine that people can't be responsible for themselves, you are pathetic.
\"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag.
