I have no idea if it'd be good or bad in the long-run, so who knows.

Adding a $.10 tax now would never go through. If we did it back in 1970 you're right, but now what's the point? It'd be politcal suicide to even propose such an idea. The good thing about higher gas prices is that it encourages conservations; SUV sales have dropped a LOT the last few months. There is too much horsepower for cars, and very few people actually need the F-250. The friggin F-150 is the size of the old F-250 now, heh. Car companies actually haven't been improving their cars' mileage all that much the last decade or so. Even companies like Honda and Toyota, while still improving, have slowed it down a lot. My friend's 1989 Accord gets 35mpg. My 96 Camry i4 lists at 23-27 mpg....so my tank should get me about 400 miles at 24mpg. I can do it, but it basically means not letting the engine rev above 2500 or so RPM while accelerating...and then not going past 65 (where it hits 2200). So I'm guessing I get about 19-20 typically.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets incredible gas mileage for an SUV. My mum bought the '04, gets about 16-19mpg...not bad, right? The 2006 hybrid gets 27mpg, AND has 264hp...It probably gets less day-to-day, but sitll thats amazing for an SUV.

The cars that should be banned forever are Escalades and Navigators. Ugh. And nobody but a fucking fire department or law enforcement needs a Suburban or Excursion. sdlkjgfds. But yeah. Car companies haven't been increasing their gas mileage much, and some averages have actually gone down because now companies like Nissan have the Armada out, which just wrecks their mpg average.

Back in the 90s the gas prices were so low because Clinton tapped the gas reserves slightly. While that's good, it's one of the reasons SUVs decided to grow. Hilary wants to do the same thing...eh.

I forget what the theory is called, but it basically that the more efficient and cheaper you make things, the more consumption rises. Make sense? If you make gas cheaper, people are just going to use more of it. If you make cars more efficient, people will be using just as much, even though they're getting more out of it. The best example would probably be computers. a 1 Kw PSU was just created....Who the fuck needs 1Kw? Everyone will within 5 years I bet . Modern rigs are already using 350-400w PSUs. 1Kw is basically a microwave. I' gonna try and find out what that theory was called though. I've thought about that but never knew it was a real theory...so hm.
Shit there is getting to be a very real need for a Kw PSU! In my computer I am on right now I have 4 HDs A DVD Burner, A CD Burner, An Invidia GeForce 6800 GT, A TV Tuner, and all the usual stuff... I am nearly maxing out my poor 375 watt PSU...
You get a MB that supports SLI with 2 video cards a dual core processor plus the fans to keep it all cool and the rest of the stuff that goes with it 1Kw will be needed. The big problem is keeping all that quiet.
Hell yeah... The Server that I am running our voice chat server on is loud. It's actually a rack mount server that I got from a school I did volunteer work at that went under (most the pitty), but since it was meant to be in a larger server room they did not really take noise level into consideration, it's got several loud high speed fans in it. Which is why I keep it in another room as a headles unit that I control remotely... The funny thing is my house much more closely resembles a computer lab than it does a dwelling...
Can I check out that lab? That's awesome. And yeah keeping a PSU like that quite would be pretty hard. My 350 is very quiet
