I'm surprised he hasn't looked into one of those companies that offer to buy your structured payments.

It's at a loss of course- but I doubt if it's as bad as 20% of the principle __________________

But it is not the lottery screwing this guy it is that's right boys and girls - the government. Lottery offers the long-term payouts to help the winning individuals maintain more of their winnings and limits their liability to guess who - government. However, those individuals who take the lump sum, are now faced with having to pay that lump sum to government. But that is what happens when you seek to punish the rich, you end up hurting the poor even more.

Oh well, this is what so many here support so vigorously. Stand up and applaud your work.

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

Without the government there would be no lottery ticket to buy. Gambling is a luxury and should be taxed as such.
--- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope ---

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

This sickens me also; but how many people do you suppose are familiar with the workings of annuities? For those with pensions, or those considering retirement; you'd better start familiarizing yourselves with this word and it's meaning for you.
The part of the man needing an operation has no meaning for an annuity. He will receive what the scheduled payout monthly is; or; if the annuity is sold, the agreed upon price- which now opens him up to a huge tax penalty.

Those said companies are exactly where a person such as this will get screwed even more. They say you will get your money now- WRONG! If you sell this income stream for a one-time payout you may get 60% if you're lucky. But I've yet to see one that advertises that you will now be taxed on that onetime payment- ALL AT ONCE! This will lower your take another 20 to 30%! Accountants and people with financial backgrounds can explain this better in person to you than I will over this forum. It is a subject known as the TIME VALUE OF MONEY.
Incidentally, this very subject has sparked a whole new interest in people advertising to buy your private mortgage paper also. I would suggest that everyone look at this subject before selling any income stream source- whether a lottery winning or privately held mortgage paper. As always, PLEASE consult an accountant for advice before entering such agreements. They are not so sunny as you may be led to believe.
As far as payments stopping when you die; please consult an attorney specializing in trusts for this issue. You are able to protect more of your assets if you have access to information such as this.
Lastly, please believe me when I say this: Wealth is nothing without knowledge, protection, and preservation. Why do you suppose there are these stories around about people who have won lotteries, and are bankrupt a few years later?
Thank you, Sarge, for your frank statement that it is not the lottery that will screw this man... but his lack of knowledge on it that will. I'm sorry about his situation; but that is why I dislike the idea of lotteries. Theytry to sell the American Dream to people for a dollar or so. People, the true American Dream can be accomplished; I am living proof of such statement.
