We used to spend about $1000 a month eating out. The new house and gas prices have cut into that a LOT. Luckily my wife has an expense account, so when she travels locally, we can go together and eat on the company dime. Right now I'm sitting in a hotel room in NC eating leftover steak and BBQ.

U.S. seeing worst food inflation in 17 years - Stocks & economy - MSNBC.com

The U.S. is wrestling with the worst food inflation in 17 years, and analysts expect new data due on Wednesday to show it’s getting worse. That’s putting the squeeze on poor families and forcing bakeries, bagel shops and delis to explain price increases to their customers.

U.S. food prices rose 4 percent in 2007, compared with an average 2.5 percent annual rise for the last 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And the agency says 2008 could be worse, with a rise of as much as 4.5 percent.

Higher prices for food and energy are again expected to play a leading role in pushing the government’s consumer price index higher for March.

What is scary is that I have been this poor before.

For some, that means adding an extra cup of water to their soup, watering down their milk, or giving their children soda because it’s cheaper than milk, DiChiara said.
Actually, FX; there is an obvious link between the gas prices and rising food prices.
Most food products In the US are transported from farm to grocer by truck. Check those deisel prices at the pump.
H80 said it best: People, its time to start using coupons and any other saver's club advantages you have. Many people still view this as being "poor". It is not. Its being smart.
Now; to Walmart. I can't speak to anybody's social view of Walmart. I know they are seen by many as the big bad wolf blowing our houses down.
But, what is a big attraction to Walmart for many is their SuperCenters. These stores feed into the American addiction for convenience. We can do grocery shopping, along with many other non-food shopping all in one place!
Now when you figure in the price of gas today, what do you think about first- politics you can't control; or the money in your pocket that you need to support your family with? This is what is going through the minds of many people when they go shopping nowadays.
"I can get everything done all in one place one just one trip"!
That is just one of the reasons why Walmart is such a force in American retail society, and always will be.
