| Is America Promoting Modern Slavery? Colonization... the Portuguese did it in Africa, the Spanish did it in South America, the English did it in North America, and now American businesses are doing it overseas. The Portuguese colonized in North Africa, discovering that people could be forced to work for them with superior weaponry, that Africans were willing to trade other Africans for goods such as cooking equipment. The Spanish found gold in South America, and then through disease and arms, wiped out a major portion of the population, quickly subduing the population, and forcing them to find more gold to make the Spaniards rich. The Spanish were not planning to stay in South America, they just set sail for the Americas for fortune and fame. The English colonized under joint stock companies, the predecessors of modern corporations. So throughout the 1500's, cheap labor turned the world into a global marketplace, cheap labor that ultimately ended in perpetual servitude, slavery. American businesses, corporations, have found new sources of cheap labor, overseas. They have set up in other countries where they don't have to pay people a decent wage, where the standard of living does not meet the standard of living in America, where workers rights are not protected by laws and unions, where the population is easily exploited. Even here in the United States, we have many desperate illegal aliens, doing work that Americans won't do for less money than Americans can afford to live off of. If it wasn't for this cheap labor, many Americans wouldn't be eating as well as they do, since a large majority of our food is processed by these illegal workers, making it available at a lower price. Has slavery taken on a new face, still based on cheap labor, but hidden under corporate law? Globalization is not new. The global marketplace has really existed since the 1500s. New technology has just made it easier, and new laws have made it easier to exploit populations who are less fortunate than we are.
