Is America Promoting Modern Slavery?
Colonization... the Portuguese did it in Africa, the Spanish did it in South America, the English did it in North America, and now American businesses are doing it overseas.
The Portuguese colonized in North Africa, discovering that people could be forced to work for them with superior weaponry, that Africans were willing to trade other Africans for goods such as cooking equipment.
The Spanish found gold in South America, and then through disease and arms, wiped out a major portion of the population, quickly subduing the population, and forcing them to find more gold to make the Spaniards rich. The Spanish were not planning to stay in South America, they just set sail for the Americas for fortune and fame.
The English colonized under joint stock companies, the predecessors of modern corporations.
So throughout the 1500's, cheap labor turned the world into a global marketplace, cheap labor that ultimately ended in perpetual servitude, slavery.
American businesses, corporations, have found new sources of cheap labor, overseas. They have set up in other countries where they don't have to pay people a decent wage, where the standard of living does not meet the standard of living in America, where workers rights are not protected by laws and unions, where the population is easily exploited.
Even here in the United States, we have many desperate illegal aliens, doing work that Americans won't do for less money than Americans can afford to live off of. If it wasn't for this cheap labor, many Americans wouldn't be eating as well as they do, since a large majority of our food is processed by these illegal workers, making it available at a lower price.
Has slavery taken on a new face, still based on cheap labor, but hidden under corporate law?
Globalization is not new. The global marketplace has really existed since the 1500s. New technology has just made it easier, and new laws have made it easier to exploit populations who are less fortunate than we are.
Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.

I see that no one touched this topic, and that's fine. I think this is a topic that needs attention, and so:

The Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala., said foreigners hired through programs for farm and non-farm laborers work in conditions akin to indentured servitude.
Rights group raps guestworker programs - Race & Ethnicity - MSNBC.com

Comprehensive Immigration Reform is code words for =SLAVERY and CHEAP LABOR.
CREOLE FOLKS: Democrats,Corporations & Bush- Push to start modern slave trade via Guest Worker Program. by Ted Duplessis

It's time we did something about this, so quit ignoring it. We've got these people here, in our country, keeping food on our tables, and sweeping the issue under the rug doesn't make it go away.

There's virtually no one left on this site except the gay-forum-trolls!

Another side of modern slavery-the sex trade...

If you believed something contributed to hundreds of thousands of people being trapped in slavery, you would do everything in your power to stop it.

Of COURSE this is going on all over the world! And of COURSE it's being ignored!

This is nothing more astounding than the Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing taking place in Darfur & Southern Sudan.

So why doesn't the United Nations do ANYTHING about ANY of it?

Why not shut the hell up and stay in your own little cage?

Try that for a change.

Please keep your off-topic argument out of this thread, guys. I find that to be very disrespectful to me and this topic that I find to be of utmost importance.

That's EXACTLY what I'm trying to do - but you and I both know what's going to happen here.

So let's address the inactivity and corruption of the UN - and why they NEVER do ANYTHING about any of these humanitarian issues...
