"I wouldn't call that a broken system."
In a CNN article about Justice Stevens recent comments against our death penalty system, Kent Scheidegger, legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, a pro-death penalty group, said "I wouldn't say that 20 or 30 cases out of 8,000 constitutes a broken system."

full article http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/08/07/de...lty/index.html

Do you agree with this guy or not?

I don't at all. We're talking about executing human beings..that's 20 or 30 lives, not just cases that were wrongly decided.
But it don't take much to get me by

Obviously the system is fatally flawed for too many individuals in my opinion. We should definitely stop the process and take time to reevaluate.

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

I just don't understand how the guy has the nerve to say that 20 or 30 lives out of any number (it's bad enough that it's only 8,000) do not constitute a broken system. Where does one get the nerve to rationalize a human life like that? I just don't understand. The people deserve a perfect system of capital punishment and nothing less. However, it is my opinion that such a system is impossible. That's just another line of reasoning that leads to my same position which is the death penalty should not exist at all. I wonder if that guy ever wondered what if one of the 20 to 30 was my brother, or my wife, or my best friend etc. How would he feel about his "doesn't constitute a broken system" comment then?

to go a little in the other direction what do you think? What do you think about the court system and death row? should a person be put on death row for 5 if not more years or less time? what really is the purpose of them sitting for 5 years, is it a hope that it will get overturned? I've been going on this other web site for death row inmates and 90% say they're not guilty! you wouldn't believe how much support scott peterson is getting(i still don't know what to think)but also is getting crap too!
