Cheney Refuses Oversight of Classified Documents

WASHINGTON, June 21—In an open letter to Vice President Cheney, the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today revealed that the vice president is seeking to close down a branch of the National Archives charged with oversight of executive branch secrecy, The New York Times reports.

Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Ca.) posted his letter on the committee’s website. The eight-page letter, accompanied by supporting documentation, described the vice president’s resistance to routine oversight of his office over the last four years. According to the letter, the vice president first refused the Information Security Oversight Office’s annual request for data regarding his staff’s document-classification procedures in 2003. The following year, Mr. Cheney’s office refused to allow regular on-site inspection of its records by the oversight office. Other executive branch agencies routinely submit to such inspections, whose purpose is simply to ensure that classified documents are properly labeled and stored.

Why didn't you put this under the executive section. This has nothing at all to do with the story originally posted regarding the actions of the CIA from the 1950 - 1970's. I love how the article claims that the leak about Plame came from the VP office. I guess the writer must have been the only person not paying attention when the Special Prosecuter admitted the leak came from State Department. But I guess it is easy to see how the VP Office and State Department can be confused. (Must be a real smart guy!!!)

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

I watched a cspan confrontation between former LAPD narcotics police officer Mike Ruppert and Former CIA director John Deutch concerning allegations that the CIA was involved with drug trafficking. It was very interesting to watch. Several books have been written on the CIA, the US government and drugs. One was Cocaine Politics, Drugs Oil and War by Peter Dale Scott (former Canadian diplomat who writes extensively on American foreign policy). Their is also Dark Alliance by Gary Webb.

I'll be more clear as to why.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Little-known documents now being made public detail illegal and scandalous activities by the CIA more than 30 years ago: wiretapping of journalists, kidnappings, warrantless searches and more.

The documents provide a glimpse of nearly 700 pages of materials that the agency plans to declassify next week. A six-page summary memo that was declassified in 2000 and released by The National Security Archive at George Washington University on Thursday outlines 18 activities by the CIA that "presented legal questions" and were discussed with President Ford in 1975.

Gerald Ford is gone, but he lives on in two of his key appointees: Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Their impact on America today is greater than Ford's, who died Tuesday at 93.

Ford appointed Rumsfeld his chief of staff when he took office after Nixon's resignation in 1974. The next year, when he made the 42-year-old Rumsfeld the youngest secretary of defense in the nation's history, he named 34-year-old Dick Cheney his chief of staff, also the youngest ever.

Linked to “Murder of CIA Scientist”

by

Secret documents have revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are “linked to the murder” of a former senior CIA scientist.

In 1953 Frank Olson, who was a key member of the CIAs secret brainwashing programme MK-ULTRA, was sent plunging from a New York hotel window.

He had threatened to reveal the CIA involvement in “terminal experiments” in post-war Germany and in Korea during the Korean War.

While aides to Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney helped cover up the background to the death of CIA scientist, Frank Olson who fell from a 10th floor window in 1953, not long after he had been classified as a potential security risk.

Olson's son Eric says his father's conscience was troubled by awareness of Nazi-style CIA experiments on human subjects.

Kathryn Olmsted, University of California-Davis history professor, recently discovered files at the Gerald Ford library that showed White House officials deliberately withheld details of Olson's death from his family.

They included a memo from Dick Cheney, who was a White House assistant at the time, to Donald Rumsfeld, the chief of staff, on July 11, 1975. That memo warned that a lawsuit by Olson's family might make it necessary "to disclose highly classified national-security information.''

Ah, no Sgt.
The State Department Huh? Thats not what Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald says! The whole investigation pointed to the VP's office yet you'll just take the word of one person(who you failed to name), after the investigation? Do you really believe this stuff or just throw it in to stick up for your party?
I mean, who cares if they broke the law, right? Oh, I forgot, theres always a national security reason why they haven't broken any laws.

As for the CIA, even you know they break the law every chance they get.
