I was reading in the same New Man magazine about Iran, and from what I gather about the article, the president of Iran is not a man that can be trusted, especially by the U.S. and Israel.

Absolutely not!...

...especially when he holds the same amount of fundamentalist zeal that Khomeini held while he was alive.

"I say let Iran go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant in the rest of the world." - Khomeini, 1981

"War is a blessing for the world and for every nation." - Khomeini, 1984

"We must prepare ourselves to rule the world and the only way to do that is to put forth views on the basis of the Expectation of the Return [of the Mahdi.]" - Ahmadinejad, January 2006

Most of the people who were hostages at the US Embassy in Tehran still believe that the Iranian prez was one of the captors. I say we should see that the entire middle east tears itself from "its" boundaries and float over the oceans of the world and let them fight among each other.

Some of the former hostages stated that they believe Ahmadinejad was the "quiet one" who listened in on and took notes during the interrogations of the hostages during that crisis.

This was, perhaps, a good experience for Ahmadinejad...since he later became a primary interrogator at Iran's notorious Evin prison.

Oh, I personally have no gripe with the Middle East, per say.

I just don't trust the fundamentalist nut jobs who happen to exist there...who, of course, don't comprise the Middle East's entire population.

I don't either. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, and the countries that border Saudi Arabia on the peninsula are okay.

Countries like Syria, (Iraq), Iran, and whatever the Palestinians call their country I guess will be marred in their own violence for many more years to come.

Boy, I can't believe Dubai is constructing the world's tallest skyscraper. They have so much room to build.

Oh, these same countries also fear the growing threat from Iran...which is why some of them have already-quite publicly-declared their intentions to develop nuclear "technologies"...(read: "weapons").

A peaceful resolution between Israel and Palestinians is a great threat to hardliners in Iran's government since the destruction of Israel as a country is one of their primary goals...along with turning the whole Middle East into a theocracy which is modeled after Iran's theocracy.

In short, they don't want to see peace made between Israel and any other country/people in the Middle East because, in doing so, it makes it harder for them to achieve their goals.

(There does exist some rational people in Iran's government, believe it or not, but they are highly marginalized since they are a minority.)

Dubai is booming right now.

I don't know what their goals are, but if it is supporting terrorism, oh well. Interesting quotes I saw about Khomeini's statements. Would you say that he so very irrational? I've always labeled the Iranians, during Khomeini's time, as "Khomeini's Children", as is if he was like their messiah and he chose his people to be his disciples.

This is what Iran's Constitution states: (as penned by Khomeini himself)

"With due attention to the Islamic content of the Iranian Revolution, the Constitution provides the necessary basis for ensuring the continuation of the Revolution at home and abroad. In particular, in the development of international relations, the Constitution will strive with other Islamic and popular movements to prepare the way for the formation of a single world community (in accordance with the Koranic verse "This your community is a single community, and I am your Lord, so worship Me" [21:92]), and to assure the continuation of the struggle for the liberation of all deprived and oppressed peoples in the world."

I'd say that this "goal" is irrational since it seeks to prevent the possibility that other people in other lands might not want their governments to act "in accordance with the Koran."

(I wonder if all the people who died in Iran during Khomeini's purges aught to be called his disciples too. )

Great question on your last line. I remember seeing pictures of those one-man firing squads, with the victims blindfolded after the Shah left Iran.
